$1.3B earmarked for EV charging network expansion in US

The Biden-Harris Administration aims to accelerate public and private investment in clean transportation with the historic grant funding.

Dive Brief:

The Biden-Harris administration opened applications Thursday for $1.3 billion in funding to support the expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the U.S. in urban and rural communities and along designated highways, interstates and major roadways, according to a press release.

The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure program is administered by the Federal Highway Administration and is open to state, regional, Tribal and local government entities. Applications are due by Aug. 28.

Kia recalls about 460,000 Tellurides and tells owners to park outside because of fire risk

Kia America is recalling nearly 463,000 Telluride SUVs — urging owners to park their vehicle outside in case the seat spontaneously catches fire, federal highway safety regulators warned Friday.

The South Korean automaker announced a recall of certain Tellurides from model years 2020-2024 because the motor that controls the power seats on the vehicles can potentially overheat. Kia America estimates that 1% of the SUVs have the defect. The recall covers Tellurides that were built between January 2019 and May 2024, according to recall documents Kia submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Tesla recalls 125K vehicles to fix seat belt warning issue

It’s the EV maker’s fifth recall this year, following a Cybertruck accelerator pedal issue in April.

Electric automaker Tesla is recalling 125,227 vehicles to fix a problem with the seat belt warning chime and reminder light, according to a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers certain 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles to fix a condition where the seat belt warning light and audible chime may not activate as intended if a passenger is not wearing their seat belt. As a result, the affected vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 for “Occupant Crash Protection.”

Some large SUVs fall short on safety: IIHS

The 2023-2024 Jeep Wagoneer was the only model to earn a Top Safety Pick award, outperforming GM and Ford SUVs.

The 2023 and 2024 Jeep Wagoneer was the only model out of three popular SUVs evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to be named a 2024 Top Safety Pick, the organization reported in its latest crash tests.

The full-size Jeep Wagoneer was evaluated alongside the popular Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition SUVs, both of which fell short in the latest IIHS crash tests. The IIHS cited poor performance in the small overlap front crash test for both the Tahoe and Expedition.

People Still Want Gas Cars Over Hybrids and EVs: Study

Name a type of car people want to buy. More specifically, what kind of powertrain are consumers interested in purchasing? Survey says! A standard gas-powered car. Even if costs and features between ICEs, hybrids, and EVs were equal, fossil fuels remain the favorite.

According to a recent study by KMPG with extremely predictable results, 38 percent of respondents still prefer a traditional gas engine when making a vehicle purchase. Hybrids were a close second at a 34-percent take rate, while EVs took third with only 21 percent of the vote. Five percent were undecided, and three percent simply didn't care. They're just happy to have a car.
