Those white layers cut into Pennsylvania mountains are ancient rock formations that are hundreds of millions of years old. When highways like I-80, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and other major roads were built throughout the 1950s-70s, crews literally blasted through mountains with dynamite to carve paths across the state.

A lot of the white and gray streaks you see are layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale from when much of Pennsylvania was covered by ancient inland seas long before dinosaurs existed.
Every road cut like this is basically a giant exposed cross-section of prehistoric Pennsylvania most people drive past without even noticing.
