I wanted to post an update.

The past few days have truly provided an ‘itch’. Waking up to a flurry of missed calls from various motor clubs and dispatch centers – including Marshall, Story County, and Iowa State Patrol – was a little bittersweet. It’s exciting and humbling to know that my services are still in demand, yet frustrating to be unable to help at this time.. This 'itch' to be out there, and helping people....still itches :)

I am hopeful that some of my current restrictions will be eased at my next Dr. appointmemt. Thus allowing me to start more freedom and then some ‘occupational workouts.’ Thiis will help me regain the necessary strength and endurance. This I am looking forward to!

This journey would been much more difficult without the incredible support system surrounding me. My thanks go to my amazing wife, Denise! She has been my steadfast caregiver. Her unwavering support, tireless efforts, and countless sacrifices through this have been nothing short of inspiring. Her strength, along with the constant encouragement and support from our families, have been immeasurable.

I am deeply touched by everyone's thoughts, prayers, well wishes, and all the messages and calls I've received. Your kindness truly humbles me and serves as a powerful motivator!

Thank you all,

Jon

We got to come home Saturday the 20th. After being gone for just under 6 weeks it was a blessing to come home. For the next 6 months I’m in quarantine. I will be at home isolated doing
rehab, doctor appointments and getting stronger as my immune system rebuilds its self. And the CAR-T kicks my leukemia’s ass!
I am amazed at how much this has taken out of me. At the start, I was walking and feeling great then the CRS set in. I find I get tired very easily, the biggest struggle is stairs(12) My PT said to practice step ups because the stairs would be the biggest hurdle. She was not lying….

Sunday brought back our baby, Mac! Thank you Julie and Tamey for loving and taking such good care of him.

For the next couple weeks it’ll be weekly visits in Iowa City and then every 2 weeks as long as all goes well. Here’s to positive thoughts and steps forward. Hopefully the flu season will stay away.
Denise and I and our family greatly appreciate all the prayers and support we have felt from all of you. The kindness and support have been very uplifting.

As we enter the Christmas week we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and God’s blessings!

Well, its been quite the last 9 days. After only being out of the hospital for 24 hours, my body was a late bloomer for CRS. And it sucked!! I'd like to say...'it was no problem' but I'd be lying. The headache and body aches were crazy. And as they gave me IV fluids, antibotics, and steroids my fever broke. And then the fun began.... I went from walking every day the first 11 days in the hospital- totaling 33 miles, to struggling to walk 10 feet to the bathroom.
The muscle spasms and overall weakness, being lightheaded, and no sleep had me at wit's end. I actually started crying because they had no coffee brewed. Those next two days were the worst. I'm so thankful for my wife and family being there for me.
And to the nurses and Doctors at 3JCP - @ University of Iowa Health Care Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center THANK YOU!!
Thank you all for your continued prayers!

I wanted to send an update about Jon.

Yesterday, Jon got a fever and started having flu symptoms, so he was readmitted back onto his floor at the U of I hospital. His temperature was as high as 103 during the night, but thankfully, his temperature this morning is down to 99.5. We hope that it continues to stay down. He is achy and having a hard time getting comfortable.

These are the CRS symptoms we knew could come, but hoped to avoid. We are told this happens when the new T- cells create many cytokines causing inflammatory things to occur in the body. Jon is currently receiving fluids and an antibiotic to help. The doctors will also keep monitoring his neurological functions as well. We will be here at least a few days as we go through this part of his treatment.

Thank you for your support and prayers. Please keep them coming!

Jon is doing really well. All of his numbers are staying constant- white cell, hemoglobin, platelets. They watch and chart those everyday. He has not had any of the reactive symptoms, which was fever, chills, etc... so the doctors feel he will not have the symptoms that occur after that- those are the neurological ones, confusion, dizziness, etc. We will be at our Airbnb now until Dec. 21 and entering a stage like Covid for the next 3 months. Masking always when we go out (Jon will not leave the house except for appts.) and only immediate people in our household, esp because of flu season. It will be different for us, esp him when he is used to being so busy. After 3 months, we'll go to the next stage 3-6 months.

I have not slept well while he has been here and finally the last two nights, I have had better sleep. I overslept a little bit today and I feel like I have mushy brain. He has had wonderful doctors and nurses and they are great with his jokes and long conversations! 😂

Lots of hugs and love to all of you. Your prayers have been working, please keep it up! ❤️
