Did you know that modern auto glass technology was born from a happy lab accident? In 1903, French chemist Édouard Bénédictus dropped a glass flask coated with a thin layer of plastic (cellulose nitrate). Instead of shattering into dangerous shards, it cracked but stayed in one piece!
Inspired by a car accident involving flying glass, he patented laminated glass — two layers of glass bonded with a tough plastic interlayer (today’s PVB). This breakthrough became standard in windshields, dramatically reducing injuries by holding the glass together during impacts.
