If your trench route runs near trees, plan around them before you start.

Roots are the main thing that stops a trencher on a French drain job.
If the machine won't cut through one, lift it up, pass over, and cut the root off by hand.

That works.
But it costs time, and it can push your drain line somewhere you didn't intend.

A few minutes walking the route before you dig will save you from rerouting mid-job.
Sandy soil is the other one to watch for out here.

Mid-July in North Florida is not the time to improvise.

The ground is saturated right now in Bradford, Clay, and Alachua counties.

Afternoon storms are not occasional this time of year. They are the schedule.

That changes how jobs should be planned, not whether they get done.

Before the next project kicks off, think about this. Schedule deliveries in the morning window when possible.

Know which days are flex days and which ones are hard commitments.

Pick your machine before the mud shows up, not after.

Wet clay behaves differently than dry clay. Access that looks fine on Monday can close by Thursday.

None of this means stopping work. It means planning a week ahead instead of a day ahead.

Rainy season runs through September. There is plenty of time to get jobs done. Planning around the weather is what keeps them moving.

Dig depth and swing clearance.

Those two measurements do most of the work for you.

They eliminate machines that are too shallow for your job.

They eliminate machines that can't swing in your space.

What's left on the list is a much shorter, cleaner decision.

Most people come in focused on size class or brand.

That's the wrong starting point.

A machine can look right on paper and still be wrong for your site.

Dig depth tells you whether it can reach your utility line, your footing, your drain.

Swing clearance tells you whether it can actually work inside your fence line or beside your structure.

Get those two numbers from your plan or your site before you call.

Eight hours on one of these machines is more mental than physical.
You have to stay locked in the whole time.
Always watching. Always thinking ahead. Always adjusting.

Most people are not used to that kind of sustained focus.

Careless mistakes happen much more easily at the end of the day.

If you're digging near a fence, a foundation, or existing landscaping, tail swing is the deciding factor.

A standard excavator swings its rear end wide when it rotates. That means you need clearance behind the machine before you even start.

On a tight residential lot, that clearance often doesn't exist.
