Performing automotive repair is often an underappreciated profession. As mechanics, we possess specialized skills that enable us to address complex vehicle issues that others cannot. Throughout my career, I have consistently prioritized exceptional service, investing my own resources, reputation, and effort to ensure customer satisfaction. I maintain transparent communication, thoroughly explaining each vehicle’s condition, identifying necessary repairs, and advising on which issues can be deferred.
To support my community, I frequently absorb financial risks, covering parts or labor costs upfront. I accommodate customers by allowing them to supply their own parts, refrain from inflating prices on parts I procure, and pass along any discounts. Additionally, I adjust labor rates to align with customers’ budgets, striving to foster trust and goodwill.
Regrettably, I have encountered a lack of reciprocity from some customers. Despite my commitment to fairness and diligence, I face unwarranted blame for part failures—issues beyond my control, as mechanics install but do not manufacture parts. When failures occur, I meticulously verify part compatibility and investigate root causes to ensure accountability. Yet, I have experienced instances where customers, influenced by misleading information from other shops, unfairly withhold payment without allowing me the opportunity to address their concerns.
These experiences have eroded my trust in the fairness of this profession. A recent incident has left me particularly disheartened, prompting deep reflection. Consequently, I have decided to complete the remaining work in my shop and transition to full retirement and prepare for our future move to Florida.
This morning, I listed my dynamometer for sale, marking the beginning of this transition.
I wish all my colleagues and customers well in their future endeavors.
