1992 Mazda Bongo Wagon GSX City Runner Diesel Turbo

A seriously unique piece of early-1990s Japanese automotive culture.

This 1992 Mazda Bongo GSX City Runner is powered by the 2.0L RF turbo-diesel engine and paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. It currently shows 143,000 KM and is an exceptionally interesting example for anyone looking for a genuine vintage Japanese van with period-correct technology and character.

The City Runner was a special trim of the Bongo Wagon, and this diesel model carries the Q-SSF8W chassis designation. Factory specifications include a 1,998cc turbo-diesel producing approximately 76 PS and 171.6 Nm of torque, rear-wheel drive, seating for eight, and the distinctive boxy proportions that make these early Bongo Wagons so recognizable.

EXTERIOR

The clear lens incorporated into the front center grille is one of the most distinctive details on this Bongo.

The van retains its original steel wheels paired with genuine MAZDA wheel caps, giving it an unmistakably period-correct appearance.

The exterior remains in very good overall condition with no evidence of major bodywork repairs and no noticeable dents. The roof does show noticeable fading, but there is no significant rust or corrosion. The doors open and close smoothly, and the body presents extremely well for a 1992 vehicle.

The undercarriage is particularly impressive. It is very clean with no significant rust or corrosion and has not been covered with an unusual chassis-black coating to hide the condition underneath.

INTERIOR AND PERIOD TECHNOLOGY

This Bongo is packed with the kind of Japanese-market technology that makes early-1990s vans so interesting.

It features a Panasonic Strada navigation system with Wi-Fi tethering, allowing access to modern video services such as YouTube and Amazon Prime.

It also has digital TV functionality for terrestrial broadcasts.

But the real highlight is the rear “Video TV” entertainment system with its period-correct CRT television.
