Since it's been a while let's start at the beginning shall we.
Anthony contacted the shop looking for someone to knock out a valve cover gasket reseal, plenum coolant line bypass, EGR delete, and emissions solenoids delete. The vehicle was at another shop previously and were not able to get this done. After getting his vehicle dropped off I got to work and immediately noticed that things were amiss. As the vehicle was not running I could not hear the condition of the engine, however when the valve covers were removed it was noted that the oil did not look normal. At this point the oil was drained from the engine and it was noted that it had excessive amounts of metal debris in it.
What initially began as a relatively simple job turned into a big project. The engine was disassembled and inspected. It was noted that it had been rebuilt at some point, however there was missing/mismatched hardware all over. The oil pan was removed and it was discovered that the engine had chewed through a rod bearing. This engine was no longer usable.
After discussing some options over with Anthony, we came up with a game plan to get this fixed and neither of us were prepared for such a huge shift in plans.
A good used NA engine was sourced and it had the following done to it:
- 120k timing belt service
- valve cover gasket reseal
- oil pan reseal
- rear main seal
- all plenum deletes
- EGR delete
- complimentary engine bay degreasing
Now Anthony has been ripping on his new Z with no issues relating to the engine. He will be back for some upgrades in the future along with more maintenance items that are normal for a vehicle this age.
