A winding mountain road in North Carolina ends at a tiny hilltop where Jupiter stops being a bright dot and turns into an actual world, with glowing nebulas and far-off galaxies lined up right behind it. The part that stuck with me most wasn't the size of the telescope, though. It was realizing how few skies this dark are still left to look through.
