A buddy dropped off his 2014 KTM 300 XCW. SX Several issues the biggest being it was stuck in 3rd gear. The other was his Rekluse clutch was not working correctly. Last he needed a new top end as he had over 250 hours on it! Tore the engine down and split the cases. Lots of metal debris but no obvious cause. All the bearings were fine, gears and shift forks looked good. Finally ai went through his clutch and discovered one of the drive pins had fallen out and been destroyed by the gear train! Flushed out the cases and transmission. Put it back together with new piston, rings, bearing, seals and gaskets. Replaced his Rekluse clutch with the OEM clutch. Engine back in the frame and accessories installed. Bike runs fantastic and my buddy is back tearing up the desert. Interesting job.

Performing a complete engine rebuild on a 2001 KX125. Top and bottom end completely locked. I was able to save the cylinder by honing but the crank is a melted mess. No complete crankshaft assemblies available so I bought a rod kit and I'm doing it the old fashioned way. Press it apart and press it back together. Truing the whole shebang brought back memories from the H.O.G. Tom Parker was a great mentor.

Customer 2008 Arctic Cat 650 H1 4x4 TRV. Brought in to get running after sitting for over 6 years. First step is add a little oil in the plug hole and slowly turn over the engine. After half a turn the engine locks. Bummer! Rotate in the opposite direction it spins for several turns. Rotate in the normal direction and the engine turns over freely. Okay now we're getting somewhere! Hit the starter button and the engine turns over fine. Go to put it at TDC and the engine locks up again. GRRRRRR! Okay pull apart the top end and find a split piston but NO bent valves. Hmmmmm. Check the rod bearing on the big end. Big end bearing is TOAST! Just the parts to rebuild the engine would run over $1500. Uneconomical to repair. Anyone have a used engine for this beast?

And so it begins. Teardown and connecting rod replacement for a 20HP riding mower. Customer stated he heard a loud noise and engine quit. This poor engine only had 1/2 a quart of oil when disassembled. It requires almost 2 quarts! PSA...change your oil folks!

I've been spending more time with my machines making parts for myself and customers. I decided I had maxed out my little Harbor Freight mini lathe so I went hunting for something more robust. I found a company called Precision Matthews that had a great reputation. I ordered my PM-1022 back in June 2022 hoping for an early summer delivery. Due to Covid, and its related shipping nightmares, my machine was delivered January 3rd, 2023! Now that I have time to mount it and get it running I am blown away by how much more advanced and solid it seems. My old lathe was a 7" x 12" and fully manual. My new lathe is a 10" x 20" with a 1HP motor, power X and Y feed plus a DRO (digital readout). I've been making myself giddy playing with all the new functions. Yeah I know "Boys and Toys" but it really does help out my customers too!

Busy day in the shop. A KTM 250XC for carb rebuild, a John Deere riding mower for belt replacement, a Yamaha Raptor for brakes and tie rod replacement, 2 chainsaws to get running and an old Kawasaki Mule for carb jetting and rebuild. I love my customers!

When a customer asks for a simple 2 stroke top end rebuild and you find this...time to have a tough discussion. After a complete rebuild the customer is happily roosting dirt again!

New signage and stickers! Thanks to Dylan at Kraken Decals for the fantastic work. Although similar in design, they have new fonts, my FB address and much brighter colors. Also these are thick decals as my old magnetic signs had a habit of getting blown off at the carwash! Once I had to go running back inside to retrieve a sign while dancing among the sprayers! My new stickers also are much thicker and have brighter colors. If you have any design graphic needs give Dylan a call.

What do you do when a customer brings in BMWF650GS with a broken left switch assembly? Previous owner had already attempted a dodgy repair. New OEM switch is around $280. Customer vetoed THAT. So I found an aftermarket switch that would work. After a bit of cutting grinding and wiring it's done. Fun job and happy customer!

Day 3. Left Durango and headed up to Silverton. Then on to Ouray, Montrose, Sapinero and scraped pegs over Black Canyon. Some great roads through Grand Mesa and finally into Grand Junction. Way hotter than any previous trip this late in the year. What a great day.
