When Calibration is Required

Calibration, is generally necessary after any event that disturbs a sensor's precise mounting or the vehicle's "resting" position:

Windshield Replacement: Many front-facing cameras are mounted directly to the glass.

Collisions: Even minor "fender benders" or bumper scuffs can jar sensors out of place.

Suspension or Alignment Work: Changes to ride height or wheel alignment shift the "aim" of the sensors relative to the road.

Sensor Service: Removing a sensor or its bracket for any reason requires a recalibration upon reinstallation.

Calibration MethodsStatic Calibration: Performed in a highly controlled shop environment.

Technicians use specialized target boards and laser-guided equipment to provide fixed reference points for the vehicle's sensors.

Dynamic Calibration: Performed while driving the vehicle at specific speeds on well-marked roads. A scan tool is connected to the car to monitor the system as it "learns" from the real-world surroundings.

Combination: Many modern vehicles require both static and dynamic procedures to fully validate all systems.
