When you’ve been driving for a while, it can be easy to form some bad habits behind the wheel. And it may not seem like it’s a big problem — until something happens.
No one wants to get into an accident on the road. That’s why it can be important to try to avoid these common mistakes each time you buckle up, to keep yourself, your passengers and other road users safe.
Mistake #1: Ignoring the Rules of the Road
Speeding, rolling through a stop sign, not using your turn signal: These may all be relatively minor infractions. Plenty of people routinely make these mistakes, but engaging in these behaviors makes the road less safe for you, other drivers, bikers and pedestrians.
Mistake #2: Device Distraction
In the car, you almost certainly have your phone, and you may have an infotainment screen built into the vehicle. Scrolling, texting or even glancing at your screen takes your eyes off of the road. Distracted driving has potentially deadly consequences.
Mistake #3: Drowsy Driving
Long road trips or late nights can lead to drowsy driving. You might be tempted to push through in order to get to your destination faster, but it’s better to pull over. Take the time to rest up so you can be alert when you’re behind the wheel.
Mistake #4: Skipping Routine Maintenance
The costs of owning a car can add up quickly. You might want to delay tire rotation or replacing worn-out brakes, but ignoring regular maintenance can make your car a danger on the road.
Mistake #5: Complacency
Driving is routine for many people, and routine can breed complacency. You may feel safe because you’ve been driving for years and you have insurance, but you never know whether other drivers are paying attention. Stay aware of your surroundings when you drive.
