Bore scoring is one of the most talked-about risks for Porsche owners with M96 and M97 engines — but what exactly is it, why does it happen, and how can you check for it yourself?

In this video I break down Porsche bore scoring 101 in simple terms. We’ll talk about what bore scoring actually is inside the engine, why it happens in certain Porsche flat-six engines, which models are most commonly affected, and what owners can do to reduce the risk.

I’ll also unbox and test a Teslong bore scope, one of the most affordable tools you can use to inspect the inside of your engine cylinders. Then I walk through a step-by-step demonstration on a Porsche 997.1 Carrera 4, showing how to access the spark plugs, insert the bore scope, and inspect the cylinder walls for signs of scoring.

This video is intended to help Porsche owners make informed decisions about their cars and to show that with a few basic tools and a bit of patience, you can perform a basic cylinder inspection yourself without paying hundreds of dollars for a dealership or specialist inspection.

Topics covered in this video:

• What bore scoring is and what it looks like
• Why some M96 and M97 Porsche engines can develop it
• Common symptoms of bore scoring
• How owners may be able to reduce the risk
• Teslong bore scope unboxing and overview
• Step-by-step guide to inspecting cylinders on a 997.1 Carrera
• What to look for inside the cylinder walls

If you own a 996, 997 911 or 986 or 987 Boxster, or Cayman, this is an important issue to understand — and hopefully this video helps demystify the topic and show that inspecting your engine is something many owners can do themselves. Owning and maintaining these cars shouldn’t be intimidating — the more we understand them, the more we can enjoy driving them. Thanks for watching Auto Amateur!

I’m continuing to love my new daily more and more, but I don’t know if Babe the ‘Blue Ox’ is the right now. It’s a he not a she and he’s just big dumb box of rocks with a fancy exterior. I’m going to call him Big Stan. If you get the movie reference, put it below and the winner gets a special edition Auto Amateur goodie.

New video just dropped on YouTube!! —> Soul Performance Exhaust on a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 | Full DIY Install + PSE vs Soul Sound Test

This is a first for the channel — and it’s a good one. In this video, I’m featuring a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, and we’re installing one of the most popular and best-sounding exhaust upgrades available for this car: the Soul Performance Sports Exhaust package, featuring the valved X-pipe center muffler with cross-axle pipes to the catalytic converters.
I start with a full product overview, explaining exactly what this system is, how it integrates with the factory Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE), and why it’s such a compelling upgrade for Cayman GTS 4.0 owners who want more sound without sacrificing drivability or refinement.
From there, I walk you under the car to show the factory exhaust layout and explain the job before turning a wrench. Then it’s a complete, step-by-step DIY installation, covering tools, fasteners, torque specs, fitment tips, and sequencing — everything you need if you’re planning to tackle this install yourself in the garage.

Finally, we get to the best part: the sound test. I compare the Factory Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) vs. Soul Performance Exhaust using my Auto Amateur side-by-side “rapid comparison”, so you can clearly hear the difference without relying on memory or hype. Cold start, idle, revs — the works.

If you own a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, are considering an exhaust upgrade, or just want to hear what this car should have sounded like from the factory, this video gives you:

- What the system is
- How it installs
- What it sounds like
- And whether it’s worth it

No fluff — just real-world detail, real sound, and a mod that genuinely transforms the car.
