Dear Service Advisor: A Love Letter
Being a service advisor is a job that is much harder than most people understand. Every day you walk through those doors, you are stepping into the middle of everything that happens between the customer and the shop.
You listen to customers explain noises, warning lights, vibrations, leaks, starting problems, shifting problems, brake concerns, electrical issues, and a hundred other things in the best way they know how. Then you take those descriptions and turn them into information that a technician can actually use.
Once the vehicle is in the hands of the tech, your job doesn’t stop. You have to understand what they found, what it means, how serious it is, what needs to be repaired now vs. what can wait, what parts are required, how much labor is involved, then take all of that technical information and explain it to a customer who might not know anything about how their vehicle works.
You do it in a way that makes sense, without talking over their head, without making them feel stupid, and without making them feel like you are trying to sell them something they don’t need.
You remain calm when asked why it costs so much, why another shop said something different, why they found the part cheaper online, why the warranty isn’t covering it, or why the repair is taking longer than expected.
You have to sell repairs without making people feel sold, recommend maintenance without making people feel pressured, explain safety concerns without using fear as a sales tactic, and tell the truth even when the truth isn’t what the customer wants to hear.
At the end of the day, the vehicle sitting in that bay isn’t just a vehicle. It’s someone’s way to get to work, someone’s way to get their kids where they need to go, someone’s livelihood, someone’s investment, or someone’s connection to the people who depend on them.
That responsibility is what makes your job so much more than sitting behind a counter and why you hold the most important position in the shop. That is why you are appreciated more than you know.
Sincerely,
The rest of Green Tech Garage Team
