AIAG Milestones | Today, let’s look back at a milestone that helped bring greater consistency to welding-system assessments across the automotive industry.

Before standardized welding-management guidance, welding processes were often evaluated differently across suppliers, plants, and OEMs — creating inconsistencies in process control, defect prevention, and long-term product reliability.

As vehicles became more advanced and manufacturing demands continued to increase, the automotive industry recognized the need for more structured approaches to welding quality, process monitoring, and continuous improvement.

To help address this challenge, AIAG collaborated with OEMs and suppliers to support more aligned welding-management practices through guidance such as CQI-15 Special Process: Welding System Assessment.

Rather than simply inspecting welds after production, these efforts helped organizations strengthen how welding processes are controlled, monitored, validated, and continuously improved throughout manufacturing operations.

This work also helped reinforce stronger connections between welding quality and broader manufacturing systems involving APQP, PFMEA, control plans, corrective action, and defect prevention strategies.

Today, many of the structured welding-management practices used across the automotive industry continue to reflect these collaborative efforts to improve consistency, process capability, and long-term product quality across complex manufacturing environments.
