1974 Camaro Z28
Another Classic car we were privileged to help keep on the road. In a time where so much is plastic, it turns heads to see a sleek Camero Z28 going down the road. This one had developed some rust and rot in the front fenders. Dave cut all that out, cleaned up the area and welded in the new panels. Everything was sanded down and primed to get ready for paint. The customer was very happy with the outcome.

Repairing the Deck Lid/Boot

The Alvis Deck Lid, or Boot lid as they say in England, took a beating. It has a flair at the bottom that matches the fenders to give it a nice line in the rear. It had a lot of wear to the aluminum sides, and where the flair had a structural bar of wood inside. The bar was replaced mainly due to rotting and cracking, and small pieces splintered off where the aluminum was nailed to the frame.
Sections were fabricated where the aluminum was missing, or too thin and beat up to be usable. Now that this section is done, it lines up with the fenders, and the base is very solid.

I know I have mentioned the words meticulous, time consuming, and patience. These all apply to the next steps. When working on the rear fenders, Tim used a small hammer to make hundreds of taps to straighten (or curve) the aluminum as needed. He would shine a light from underneath to see if there were any pin holes or cracks. He cut dozens of tiny aluminum squares, smaller than a Tic Tac, that were welded over the holes. They all had to be ground flush, and sanded smooth. Without the “light test” so much would have been missed. Then it is back to fitting the fenders on the car once more. It may seem small, but straightening the metal here or there can throw it off. EVERYTHING needs to “fit well” before any mud, priming, or painting takes place. You can’t take the chance of messing up a beautiful paint job at the very end, because something won’t fit.

Switching mediums; from metal back to wood. Tim worked on the roof of the Alvis, which is actually a wooden lattice type frame made of Ash; a strong and pliable wood. This technique lightens the weight of the car considerably. A special rubberized fabric is then permanently attached. This was not a sun roof. The practice was also used on the 1924 Bay State. New frame pieces were rough cut. A lot of sanding was required to get the fit just right for every piece. Small nails and glue were used to hold them in place. You can see on this red Alvis the waterproofed fabric roof.
Although our Alvis is not ready for Prime Time, you can see one or two Alvis’ at the Bay State Motor Festival. It’s Sunday June 21st, in Framingham, MA at Cushing Memorial Park. 9AM to 2PM. Make sure to bring a hat, suntan lotion, and plenty to drink. There is a food court available. Do your furry friends a favor and leave them at home. This summer sun is brutal.

Some Like It HOT, Red Hot
For car enthusiasts, especially the baby boomers, it is so important to keep the cars of their youth, i.e. the 50’s and 60’s, from rusting away. “That Car” brings back memories of their First or Favorite. That’s why it matters to All Car Care to bring back these beauties. Our Body techs Tim and Dave, with over 95 years of experience are proficient in all phases of the Auto Body and collision repair industry, including structural repairs, color matching, fabrication, and restoration.
From an everyday driver, to competition quality, these cars are loved and cared for. Some may only need attention to a particular area, like this 1965 Ford Mustang fastback coupe. The bottom of the passenger door was showing a lot of rust. It’s ground away until you hit clean metal. In many areas it was only rust. It made sense to replace the door to avoid any specs of rust elsewhere developing down the road into an issue.
Once the door is prepped, a color match is done, then painted. After, the glass, handles, etc. are swapped over, then everything is tested. The result is a Red Hot Mustang that can be enjoyed all summer long.

As they say “Don’t sweat the small stuff” and it is mostly small stuff.
Not always small, but very time consuming. Underneath the aluminum frame of the Alvis is a wooden frame of hardwood Maple and Oak. The aluminum frame is nailed to the wood. Much of the old frame was rotted. The aluminum had to be carefully pealed back, and the wood pieces were removed and measured with drawings made. Then new pieces were rough cut to match. Many hours go into shaping and smoothing the piece as they must fit perfectly. They are then glued or nailed into place. Once done, the aluminum has to be rolled back and tacked into place. The whole driver’s pillar and roof beam above the passenger’s door had to be replaced. Then you start on the next section. This is repeated over and over.
On close examination of the photo, you can see all the tiny nail holes in the wood.

An area where the aluminum took a beating is the fender filler panel pieces. The ends of these pieces were bolted into the bumper. They were, twisted and mangled, with pieces missing. What was left of the old ends had to be cut away. They had to be completely rebuilt.

Ready for Racing Again
This 66 Beach fiberglass race car came to us last year to have a complete makeover. It came in a bright bumble bee yellow. The owner wanted a very bright orange; impossible to miss. In a nut shell, the car had to be totally stripped down, fix any damage, sanded, primed, painted, and polished to a super shine. It was ready to go to the races.
Unfortunately, the body was not sitting high enough so in the turns, the tires were rubbing inside the front fenders. As the season wore on, cracks and holes appeared. Fiberglass patches were put in place from underneath. It came in this Spring to restored. The cracks and damage were filled, then sanded and primed, color coat, sanded, clear coated and buffed to a high shine. The customer will apply a fresh set of decals of numbers, stripes and logos.
