Well the great crew made delivery late last night at the Tahoe Keys Marina. This 28'06" super wide load , was carefully planned from Kkmi Boat Yard , in Richmond California, to the Tahoe Keys Marina, in South lake Tahoe. Our part in this project started with multiple route surveys starting in December of 2025. We did have our complications with this load starting with an unplanned lane closure in the placerville area, an independent traffic control contractor had an unauthorized lane closure up that caltrans did not know about. Which caused delays in the Placerville California area on August 31st. We also had very tight areas going over Echo Summit across highway 50 that were pre-planned to be walking only areas to move this very large vessel through, although it did cause traffic delays, that was pre-planned and was necessary to move this vessel to its destination via this route. Other routes were looked at in the planning process, but proved to not be big enough to accommodate a load of this size. We appreciate all of the hard work that Caltrans, California Highway Patrol, and all the cities and counties that we went to go through efforts to get us through this permitting and movement process...

Did you see the Blue Zephyr make its head-turning journey up Highway 50?

Inspection and decontamination is mandatory for all motorized watercraft, and a 28-foot wide catamaran is no exception. Since existing stations cannot fit such a wide load, the Lake Tahoe Invasive Species Program worked with the owners to inspect and decontaminate it where it didn't pose a risk to local waterways.

Lake Tahoe Boat Inspections Inspection Supervisor Gus Tjernagal traveled to Richmond to check the vessel top to bottom, bow to stern. The catamaran was lifted from the San Francisco Bay, a place where mussels visibly cling to the piers. Tjernagal performed an expert, 8-hour decontamination to ensure no aquatic hitchhikers, such as highly invasive golden mussels, would make it past that point. Once cleared, it was ready to start its journey to Lake Tahoe.

Transporting and permitting the vessel took coordination amongst local agencies. The program partnered with Uphyoars mobile decontamination, and the boat owners paid for the process. The Blue Zephyr’s owners are proposing to run charters out of Ski Run Marina on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. They are working with TRPA and marina managers to comply with all shoreline permitting requirements.

When you see Blue Zephyr on the water, you’re seeing the result of a commitment to bringing it to Lake Tahoe clean, pristine, and ready to sail.
