For anyone that came by the shop on a Thursday morning to participate in “Uncle Gerry Donut Day” we regret to inform you after a three year battle with lung cancer, he passed away Saturday afternoon peacefully with his wife and one of his sons by his side. It would take more paragraphs than anyone's willing to read in order to write about the huge, positive influence he had on everyone in the family and anyone that knew him in the US Army (1960-66),at J&R Auto Repair, Annunciata church, BSA Scout Troop 773, Nalco Chemical, St John parish and many other places.

Heaven must’ve needed the Big Guns called out for some old Mopar brakes or Hank and Roger may have needed him to tune up a golf cart. Whatever it may have been, his Earthly body is no longer suffering.

The wake is this Thursday 2/28 from 3 - 8pm at Elmwood Chapel 11300 W. 97th lane. (1/2 blk west of US 41) St John, IN

Funeral will be Friday morning starting 9am at Elmwood.

About 2 am today, our world got a little dimmer.
With the passing of the 3 year anniversary of him going into the hospital, then the 18 month diagnosis, two year battle with cancer and making progress, my dad, Roger Michaels succumbed to cancer. Knowing this was coming for the past two weeks doesn't make it any easier. He fought and he Fought so damn hard until the cancer finally spread to his back and lung over the last month -knowing that usually pancreatic cancer takes a person out in less than 6 months proves what a true fighter he was.
My dad taught me the value of friendship, loyalty and honesty and how those all translate into how you treat people daily. Our customers weren't just customers at the shop MOST of them were friends. Generations of families rolled through our shop and while he may not have remembered your name, he damn sure remembered your car (sometimes in the parking lot of a restaurant, or out shopping -and always said hello if he saw you, even though cleaned up, many of you may not have recognized him at first).

I expect these next two weeks (and beyond) to be taken on a roller coaster of emotions, but please all I ask is for you to leave your favorite story of my dad below. Looking through pictures and reminiscing is a cathartic way of coping.
..and don't grieve for him even though I know it's hard, laugh about the times you had with him.

He's happy and not in pain. That I'm sure of.

How many of you remember when Roger started out in South Holland doing body work? The shop was green, the fence was short, and the fire to see his vision through in the 33 year old's eye was strong!
