Transmission fluid is doing five jobs at once — lubricating moving parts, cooling the transmission, cleaning internal components, protecting metal surfaces, and actually transmitting hydraulic power to shift gears. Over time, the fluid breaks down, becomes contaminated, and loses its ability to do any of those things well. Dirty fluid is one of the leading causes of premature transmission failure. Most manufacturers recommend a flush every 30,000–60,000 miles — but many drivers skip it entirely. 💧

There is a document your mechanic should always check — and most people have never heard of it.

A Technical Service Bulletin, or TSB, is a notice that a manufacturer sends to dealerships and independent repair shops when they discover a known issue with a vehicle. Not serious enough to trigger a recall, but worth knowing about. It might be a specific noise, a shifting problem, an electrical quirk, or a software issue that affects a certain model year under certain conditions. The TSB tells the mechanic exactly what the problem is and what the approved fix looks like.

TSBs are different from recalls in one important way: manufacturers do not notify owners directly. The bulletin goes to the repair community, and it is up to your mechanic to check whether any TSBs apply to your vehicle before starting a diagnosis. A shop that skips this step might spend hours chasing a problem that already has a known, documented answer.

We check TSB databases before diagnosing any vehicle that comes through our door. It saves time, saves money, and means we fix the right thing the first time. That has always been how we operate.

Did You Know? There is no single public database of all TSBs. Shops subscribe to services like Identifix or ProDemand to access them — the same professional tools we use every day here at Precision.

Underinflated tires can reduce your fuel economy by up to 3 percent — and that adds up over the course of a year. It is a small thing that most people never think to check, but a tire pressure gauge takes about two minutes. Summer heat can actually cause tires to overinflate, too, so it is worth checking in both directions. We check tire pressure on every vehicle that comes through the shop at Precision Transmission.

Electric vehicles do not have a transmission — or do they?

You have probably heard that EVs are simpler because they have fewer moving parts. That is mostly true when it comes to the engine. But the idea that electric vehicles have no transmission is not quite the full story.

Most EVs do not have a multi-speed gearbox like a traditional automatic or manual transmission. Electric motors produce strong torque across a wide range of speeds, so they do not need multiple gear ratios to stay efficient. But virtually every electric vehicle still has a single-speed reduction gear — a gearset that steps down the high RPM of the electric motor to a usable wheel speed. That reduction gear has bearings, seals, and lubrication requirements just like any other drivetrain component. Some performance EVs, like certain Porsche models, actually do use a two-speed transmission.

So the short answer is: EVs still have drivetrain components that wear, need fluid, and occasionally need service. The good news is that without a torque converter, clutch packs, and multiple gear sets, there is genuinely less to go wrong. The bad news is that when something does go wrong, it is often more expensive to address.

Did You Know? The Ford F-150 Lightning uses an electric motor at each axle — front and rear — each with its own reduction gear. That is two drivetrain systems working together every time you drive.

Your car runs on software — and just like your phone, sometimes it needs an update.

Modern vehicles from Ford and GM have dozens of computers on board. The engine control module, transmission control module, body control module — each one runs its own software, and manufacturers regularly release updates to fix bugs, improve performance, and address issues discovered after the vehicle left the factory. This process is called a reflash or a software update, and it is more common than most people realize.

You might need one if your vehicle is running rough, shifting oddly, getting worse fuel economy than expected, or if a warning light keeps coming back after other repairs have been made. Sometimes the hardware is fine and the software just needs to be brought current. A reflash can also be required as part of a recall or a Technical Service Bulletin repair.

Here is something worth knowing: many shops send this work out to the dealer, which adds time and cost. We do Ford and GM software updates right here in our shop, in-house. That means faster turnaround and one less handoff for your vehicle.
