Check Engine Chuckles

My car kept stalling. I asked it why. It said it was just trying to get its life together.

We have all been there. But a stalling car usually has a real reason behind it, and we can help sort that out. No judgment here.

Know someone who could use a Monday laugh? Send this their way.

πŸ”§ Technical Tuesday

Did you know your automatic transmission doesn't have a direct mechanical link to your engine? Instead, it uses a torque converter β€” a fluid coupling that transfers power through transmission fluid. At low speeds, the fluid slips, letting your car idle without stalling. As RPMs rise, the converter locks up for maximum efficiency. It's essentially a hydraulic pump and turbine spinning inside a sealed housing. When a torque converter fails, you may feel shuddering, slipping, or notice your transmission overheating. πŸš—

Fun Fact Friday!

Car tires were originally white β€” that is the natural color of rubber. It was not until manufacturers started adding carbon black to the mix that tires turned dark, and the reason was purely practical: carbon black dramatically increases how long a tire lasts. Good tires make a bigger difference in safety than most people realize. If yours are looking worn or uneven, we check tires as part of every service at Precision Transmission.

Technical Tuesday πŸ”§

Your car might be reporting problems to the manufacturer before you even notice something is off.

Many newer vehicles β€” especially those from Ford, GM, Ram, and others β€” have cellular connections built right in. The same way your phone can send data in the background, your car can send diagnostic information to the manufacturer's servers. If a sensor reading goes out of range, if a component starts showing unusual behavior, or if the vehicle detects a pattern that matches a known problem, that data can get flagged β€” sometimes before any warning light ever comes on.

For manufacturers, this is useful for identifying widespread issues and issuing software updates or service bulletins. For you, it means your car is being monitored in ways that were not possible even ten years ago. Some automakers will notify you directly through an app or owner portal if something needs attention.

The flip side is that your vehicle is generating a lot of data. Most of it stays with the manufacturer or dealer, and the policies around how it is used vary. It is worth reading your connected services agreement if you are curious what is being shared.

Did You Know? Some automakers can push over-the-air software updates directly to your vehicle overnight β€” fixing bugs, updating maps, or adjusting engine calibration without you ever having to bring it in.

Curious about what your car's systems might be telling us? Give us a call at 574-282-2806. We have diagnostic scanners from five different manufacturers, and we know how to read the full picture.

Check Engine Chuckles

My mechanic told me my engine was knocking. I said, "Well, somebody should answer it."

Knocking engines are your car's way of asking for help. We are pretty good listeners over here at Precision Transmission. Been at it since 1978.

Pass this along to someone who needs a good chuckle this week.

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage, service, and dedication gave us the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As we spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us never forget the heroes who gave everything for our nation.

From all of us at Precision Transmission, thank you to the fallen and the families who continue to carry their legacy.

Fun Fact Friday: Did you know the first electric car was built in the 1830s?

That's rightβ€”long before the gas engine took over, people were already driving electric vehicles. History has a way of repeating itself, doesn't it?

Whether you're driving a classic gas engine or jumping into the EV revolution, one thing stays the same: you need a trusted shop that knows how to keep your vehicle running right.

At Precision Transmission, we've been keeping South Bend's vehicles on the road since 1978. We've seen it all, fixed it all, and we're ready for whatever the future of cars brings.

Your vehicle, electric or not, deserves expert care. That's what we do.

Fun Fact Friday!

The average car engine has over 200 moving parts, and every single one of them depends on clean oil to do its job. When that oil breaks down or runs low, those parts start wearing against each other in ways you can't see until the damage is already done. It is one of the simplest things to stay on top of, and one of the most important. If you can't remember the last time you had yours changed, stop by 902 S. Michigan St. β€” we'll take a look.
