We’ve had this classic Mercury in the shop for some pretty extensive detail work. We started by inspecting the finish and measuring the paint thickness before moving into paint correction, then spent time bringing the gloss back to the paint and hand polishing the wheels and chrome. It turned out beautifully, and we wrote a little more about how we approach detailing a classic like this. Link in the comments.

Before we start buffing a classic, we want to know exactly what we’re working with. We check the paint closely for swirl marks and other defects, then measure the paint thickness so we have a clear picture of what is there before we make a single pass with the buffer. It takes a few extra minutes, but it gives us the information we need to do the job right.
