EAT YOUR JELL-O DAY

Trademarked in 1897 by Pearle Wait of Leroy, New York, Jell-O is the novel and fun dessert loved by millions. Francis Woodward, who later purchased the recipe and trademark, eventually made Jell-O a household name. With 21 different flavors, Jell-O satisfies every taste and can be enjoyed in numerous combinations.

Jell-O's primary ingredient is gelatin. Gelatin consists of collagen, specifically animal collagen. It's a protein extracted from the connective tissues of cows and pigs. Once the protein is broken down and extracted, the collagen is dried and ground into a fine powder.

Jell-O has been the subject of many classroom art and science projects throughout the years. From the study of viscosity and laser beams to gelatin artwork, Jell-O inspires in and outside the kitchen.

Eat Your Jell-O Day specifically tells us to eat. So, whether it is molded, layered, or mixed with fruit, vegetables, or marshmallows, be sure to have some. NATIONAL 7-ELEVEN DAY
On July 11, we celebrate National 7-Eleven Day and celebrate with one convenience store chain! Conveniently scheduled on 7-11 of each year, the day often features one of their signature items, the Slurpee. Some people call today National Slurpee Day, but we want to stick to the original name, National 7-Eleven Day.


Since July is known for its summer heat, an icy cold beverage seems like the popular choice for cooling off all summer long. On National 7-Eleven Day, we want to focus on customers who enjoy the Slurpee because the chain offers discounts and often free Slurpees in their many flavors.

The Slurpee debuted in 1966. While the machine already existed, 7-Eleven modified the machine made by Knedlik, which was used to make the Icee. After modification, 7-Eleven branded and licensed the frozen drink under the name Slurpee. Advertising executive, Bob Stanford, gave the sweet, icy drink the name for the sound it makes as it is sucked through a straw.

COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY
Each year on the second Friday in July we celebrate Collector Car Appreciation Day. This day recognizes the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.


Americans have had a fascination with automobiles since the first U.S. horseless carriage was demonstrated in 1893 by the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. The romance of the motor took us from rough country roads to iconic highways and byways. We were also able to stretch our legs and cross the country more independently than ever before. The urge to go faster, fleeter and finer were inspirations for design and ingenuity. Additionally, assembly lines made cars more affordable.

The appeal of the automobile influenced the American sense of adventure. Nostalgia, perseverance, and exploration are the topics of the day. Surprisingly, the automobile and the horse shared the road for a time causing much confusion. Stop signs and signal lights were non-existent. Rules of the road were not yet established. Still, motor companies began to tailor their designs to a public demanding a particular style.

Today, the collectors of these bygone eras keep history and memories alive. They restore and maintain old metal, engines, and blinkers. Crank, push-button, or throttle starters once rusting in a barn rev to life. Specialists take great care to find the right part or color, and skilled artists put their hard labor to work restoring a single collector car. They spend hours on end painting, repairing, rebuilding, and welding to recreate the final result of a pristine collector car.

Collector Car Appreciation Day recognizes those individuals dedicated to preserving a piece of American history. We associate each era with a certain car. Whether we ride in a Prohibition-era Cadillac Sedan, a 1950s era muscle car, or in our grandfather's pickup truck, they take us back.

NATIONAL DAY OF ROCK 'N' ROLL
July 7 is National Day of Rock 'n' Roll on the National Day Calendar and it's time to put on your dancing shoes to dance the day away! On National Day of Rock 'n' Roll we plan to help you get your groove, starting with when rock 'n' roll first hit the charts.


This history of rock 'n' roll begins in the late 1930s from African-American music containing combinations of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, and country music. By the 1940s, instruments like the saxophone and piano were added to the sound, intensifying the appeal. It wasn't until the 1950s that rock 'n' roll hit the mainstream music scene, causing a social shift in society. National Day of Rock 'n' Roll explores the impact this music genre has had throughout history.

When we think of the early years of rock 'n' roll we easily see a young Elvis Presley or Chuck Berry on stage performing before impressionable teens. We see images of girls screaming and some crying, too. Why did a music genre have such an impact on young adults and what does it mean today?

Many "adults" during this musical era viewed rock 'n' roll as an appalling and disgusting portrayal of what music should not be. Before this genre hit the stage, music was soft, mellow, and very wholesome. In fact, parents thought rock signified the rejection of morals. Most parents were trying to stop rock 'n' roll from being listened to.

Listening to rock meant young people were rejecting their parents' beliefs and expectations. Before rock, music was a separation of class, religion, and especially race. The rise of rock-n-roll would cause cultures to become intertwined, with young people looking at music as a way to go against their parents and mingle with anyone who enjoyed the same music as them.

NATIONAL FRIED CHICKEN DAY
On July 6, chicken lovers across the country recognize National Fried Chicken Day by feasting at a nearby restaurant, at home, or at an outdoor picnic.


Scottish immigrants brought their tradition of deep-frying chicken in fat to the southern United States. After its introduction to the American South, fried chicken soon became a staple. Over time, cooks added seasonings and spices to enrich the flavor of the chicken.

Fried chicken is a dish consisting of chicken pieces floured or battered, then pan-fried, deep-fried, or pressure-fried. The breading adds a crisp coating to the exterior of the chicken. Knowing how to get a good crisp on the chicken may seem elusive to some. Some of the best cooks will tell you the keys to achieving the crispiest fried chicken involve seasoning well and early in the process, adding starch to your flour, and frying your chicken at the right temperature (the oil should be 300°F). Finally, let the chicken rest before serving to allow the juices to be absorbed back into the meat. Just like beef and pork, chicken will be more tender when allowed to rest.
