One of the questions I get asked from time to time is, “Can you just apply the ceramic coating without machine polishing?”

The answer is…in most cases, no.

Most people think machine polishing is only done to remove scratches and make the paint shine. While it certainly improves the appearance of the paint, it also serves another very important purpose—it removes waxes, sealants, oxidation, and other contaminants that can prevent a ceramic coating from bonding properly.

A ceramic coating is designed to bond directly to your vehicle’s clear coat. If there’s any wax or sealant left on the surface, the coating isn’t bonding to the paint—it’s bonding to that layer of protection instead. As that wax or sealant wears away, it can take the ceramic coating with it, dramatically reducing its durability and performance.

This is especially important on brand-new vehicles. Many people assume a new vehicle doesn’t need any paint preparation, but that’s simply not the case. Most local dealerships apply a wax or paint sealant before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. While that’s perfectly fine for a traditional wax or sealant package, those products must be removed before a ceramic coating can be applied. A machine polish is the most effective way to remove those products while also eliminating any light imperfections the vehicle may have picked up during transportation or while sitting on the dealership lot.

Think of it like building a house. You wouldn’t build it on loose soil and expect it to last. You’d start with a solid foundation. The same is true with a ceramic coating. The coating is only as good as the surface it’s bonded to.

After polishing, I perform a panel wipe to remove any remaining polishing oils, ensuring the coating is bonding directly to clean, bare clear coat.

The ceramic coating itself is only part of the process. The preparation beforehand is what determines how well it bonds, how it performs, and how long it lasts. That’s why I don’t skip the prep—it protects your investment and helps ensure you get the results you expect from a professional ceramic coating.

Ceramic touch up for Sharon this evening. Her beautiful Tahoe was involved in a hit and run which resulted in it needing a couple of panels painted. So, of course that meant that those panels needed to be recoated.

Her vehicle is once again looking like it should, absolutely beautiful!

A huge thank you to Terri for her continued support! She has been supporting my little business since the very beginning, and I truly appreciate the trust she has placed in me over the years.

This evening, her beautiful Porsche Cayenne stopped by for its scheduled ceramic maintenance. While it was here, I also gave the interior a quick refresh with a mini interior detail. Terri takes great care of her vehicles, so they’re always in fantastic condition, which makes my job a little easier.

A big thank you to Mandy for trusting me with her beautiful new Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport! I’d also like to thank John’s Customs for recommending OCDetails. I truly appreciate the referrals and support from local businesses.

Mandy’s Tacoma received a machine polish, my three-year IGL Arcane ceramic coating, and a complimentary windshield coating.

Her truck already looked fantastic, but now the paint has even more depth and gloss while being protected for years to come. The ceramic coating will make it much easier to wash and keep looking its best, while adding excellent protection against the elements.

Just a friendly reminder that nothing hurts a small business more than a no-call, no-show.

When I schedule a ceramic coating, I only book one vehicle for that entire day. If you don’t show up, I lose a full day’s worth of work that I can’t get back.

I completely understand that life happens. Plans change, emergencies come up, and schedules get hectic. All I ask is for a quick call or text to let me know. That gives me a chance to offer your appointment to someone else or simply make other plans with my family instead of spending the day waiting at the shop.

It stings a little more when I send an appointment reminder a couple of days before, get a 👍🏻 in response, and then no one shows up.

I truly appreciate every one of my customers, and I know the vast majority of you are respectful of my time. Thank you for supporting my small business and helping me continue doing what I love.

Thank you so much to Brian and Michele for trusting me with another one of your vehicles! This beautiful Toyota RAV4 XLE is now the third vehicle they have entrusted to me, and I truly appreciate their continued support of my little business.

I’d also like to thank John’s Customs for helping make this RAV4 even better by tinting the front windows while it was here. The ceramic tint matches the factory glass perfectly and really completes the look.

For my part, I performed a machine polish to maximize gloss and ensure the paint was properly prepared before applying my favorite ceramic coating, IGL Coatings Arcane, to all of the painted surfaces. I then finished everything off with a complimentary ceramic windshield coating.

This RAV4 is now looking fantastic and will be much easier to keep clean and protected for years to come. Thank you again, Brian and Michele, for your continued trust and support!

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is just how incredibly thin the paint has become on new vehicles. Toyota seems to be one of the biggest offenders, but they’re certainly not alone. Manufacturers across the industry are applying thinner paint than they did years ago.

I just measured the paint thickness on a brand new Toyota RAV4. Here are the readings (in mils, or thousandths of an inch):

• 2.16 mils
• 2.66 mils
• 2.92 mils
• 3.00 mils

Those measurements include everything—the primer, color coat, and clear coat. When a detailer performs a paint correction, we’re only polishing the clear coat, which is just a fraction of that total thickness.

For a little perspective, a standard sheet of copy paper is about 4 mils thick. That means the entire paint system on parts of this brand new vehicle is actually thinner than a single sheet of printer paper.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I recommend protecting new vehicles as early as possible. A quality ceramic coating won’t make your paint bulletproof, but it does add a sacrificial layer that helps reduce environmental damage, makes washing easier, and helps preserve the clear coat you have.

When paint is this thin from the factory, protecting it isn’t just about making it shine—it’s about helping preserve one of the most expensive parts of your vehicle for years to come.

Thank you so much to Paul for trusting me with his son Aiden’s beautiful Subaru WRX STI.

Aiden has done some incredibly tasteful modifications to this car, so having them trust me with it truly means a lot. About a month ago I ceramic coated those gorgeous forged COBB wheels, and they patiently waited until I had an opening to protect the rest of the car.

Today, the WRX STI received a one-step paint correction followed by my three-year IGL Arcane ceramic coating to enhance the gloss while providing years of protection. I also finished it off with a complimentary windshield coating.

The results speak for themselves, and this Subaru is now looking its absolute best while being much easier to keep that way.
