It is February 18th and so far there have been 7 avalanche fatalities this month in Colorado. That puts our total number of fatalities for the season at 11. 3 of those people were not carrying avalanche rescue gear.

It has been a really tragic year for the backcountry community. Nationwide, there have been 27 avalanche fatalities this season. Our heart aches for everyone that has been impacted by all of these tragic events.

The snowpack is dangerous and your standard safe routes may not be safe right now. They may not be safe for the rest of the winter. It's time to take a really hard look at your objectives and go back to your avalanche basics of terrain management.

You need to check the forecast. Read the summary. Look at the avalanche problems. Read the discussion. Look at the recent observations. Understand why our snowpack is the way it is. Think about heading to places where you can avoid avalanche terrain.

You need to carry rescue gear. AT A MINIMUM, that includes an avalanche beacon, a shovel, and a probe.

There isn't a photo, or a video, or a line that is worth risking your life for. The mountains will be there.

There were two fatal avalanche accidents in the Front Range Zone on Sunday, February 14. A snowmobiler was caught and killed in an avalanche on Mount Epworth, west of Rollins Pass. A backcountry snowboarder was caught and killed in an avalanche on Mount Trelease, north of Loveland Pass. Both avalanches occurred on east facing slopes above treeline. We've published preliminary reports on our Colorado Accidents page, https://avalanche.state.co.us/accidents/colorado/ We will update the reports as we gather additional information.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and everyone affected by these tragic events. It has been a winter full of loss in our backcountry community, and everyone may be affected differently. There are many resources if you are struggling and Colorado Crisis Services https://coloradocrisisservices.org/ can help immediately, with information, or provide referrals.

This is tragic week for all of us in the United States, with more deaths in avalanches than we've seen since 1910 and three accidents that killed three people or more. Monday's accident near The Nose in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado is a painful reminder of the danger of multiple people exposed to a large avalanche path and the way terrain traps amplify the consequences of an avalanche. You can read the full report on this accident here: https://bit.ly/39WUB7Y. This has been a difficult week for a lot of people in our community, in Colorado and across the country. Please keep this in mind before you post a comment on this thread.

Our deepest condolences go out to the friends, families of the people killed in this accident and everyone who's been affected by this tragic event.
