Cause: we found the low frequency dampners dried out

Correction: we replaced them and because we are chasing this noise and there are a lot of dried out parts we are awaiting to see if this was the only fix. All ok at this time.

CUSTOMER CONCERN

Customer states the vehicle is making a loud popping noise that sounds similar to a failed ball joint or other suspension component. Customer requested inspection and diagnosis of the noise.

CAUSE

Upon inspection, we found the front brake pads were completely worn and approaching metal-to-metal contact. The front brake rotors were also heavily worn and had developed a significant lip.

After removing the driver-side wheel and continuing the inspection on the passenger side, we found one wheel stud missing. Upon removal of the passenger-side wheel, we discovered the wheel stud threads were damaged/stripped, requiring replacement of the passenger-side hub assembly.

On the driver side, we also found that one of the brake caliper mounting/slide pin bolts had broken, allowing the caliper to lift out of position and make contact with the inside of the wheel. This was determined to be the source of the popping/clunking noise reported by the customer.

CORRECTION

Replacement front brake pads and rotors were obtained through a local parts vendor, along with a replacement passenger-side hub assembly and wheel stud/lug hardware. A new brake caliper pin/bolt hardware kit was also obtained for the driver-side caliper.

The customer was advised that, due to the condition of the driver-side caliper and the broken hardware, replacement of the caliper should be considered a priority future repair. Although the caliper was secured with new hardware and was functioning properly at the time of service, its continued service life cannot be guaranteed.

All approved components were installed and secured. The braking system was inspected after installation, and the new brake pads and rotors were properly burnished/bedded. A final operational check was performed to verify proper brake operation and confirm that the repaired components were secure.

Vehicle was operating properly at the completion of service. Customer was informed of the recommended future driver-side caliper replacement.

Customer states: my sons vehicle has this really bad vibration and loose feeling to it. We took it to a local shop to get checked out and they said it was going to cost a few grand in parts to fix it. Can you come and look and see if what they told us was right? We were referred to you by a friend of ours that said you do good work and that you can be trusted

Cause: we found the main cause of the vibration and looseness was the inner tie rod on the driver side, and the inner and outer tie rod on the passenger side. We made note that some of the ball joints had a little play but not enough to be concerned about. Also made mention of the torn CV axle boot and a few other things.

The customer wanted to go ahead and fix the control arms and tie rods, and we managed to find a few kits online but the best bang for their buck kit has upper and lower control arms, inner and outer tie rods, rack and pinion bellows, and quick struts for around 500, about 1000 less than most places. And the CV axle we got locally.

*Correction: we replaced the majority of the front end components and repaired a few odds and ends pieces. While replacing components we found a brake fluid master cylinder reservoir level sensor broken and informed the customer, we also recommended an alignment after this and he said he was going to take it to a local shop for the alignment. All ok at this time.
