Vai, Crete, Greece
Vai, Crete, Greece
On the remote northeastern tip of the island of Crete in Greece lies Vai—a quiet corner far from the usual tourist trail. At the heart of this region is its beach, a broad curve of golden sand kissed by the calm, shallow waters of the Aegean. With sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers, it's an ideal spot for swimming, relaxing, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. But what truly sets Vai apart lies just behind the sand: Europe's largest natural palm grove. It is made up of over 5,000 Cretan date palm trees, a species unique to Crete and parts of Türkiye.

In the early 1970s, Vai was 'rediscovered' by hippies, who made it their haven after being moved out of the village of Matala. By the 1980s, however, increasing numbers of visitors and a lack of infrastructure had left the area littered and degraded. Recognizing its ecological and cultural value, authorities declared Vai a protected zone. Cleanup efforts restored the area, and today, Vai is one of Crete's most beautiful and unspoiled natural treasures. It's a reminder of how careful stewardship can bring a place back to life.

Woodland Lake Park is one of our go-to short outings. It's just 23 miles south of JRR (35 minutes) and provides a paved trail that goes all the way around the lake with nice benches (and a long snake made of painted rocks built by local kids) and a covered bridge. There are lots of picnic pavilions along with playing fields, disc golf, ball courts, a boat launch and a fishing dock.

The water levels at the lake are still way down and the east end of the lake is now a meadow and what water remains in that end is covered with algae.

There were lots of Canada geese freshly tagged and collared by AZ Game and Fish, a few mallards and a very noisy raven.

Woodland Lake Park is just off of White Mountain Blvd in Pinetop/Lakeside. Take Woodland Lake Rd (not to be confused with Woodland Rd which you will come to first) for 1/2 a mile and then turn right into one of the two access roads--one that takes you to the boat ramp area and the other that takes you to the covered bridge and the playing fields.
