1972 Blazer update (7)

With so much going on lately, I've slacked on the updates. So here is where the blazer is currently.. Installed modern style door and tailgate latch systems. (Tailgate not pictured) All bodywork on the exterior of the blazer has been completed.

Polyester primer was then sprayed and blocked down so the blazer is fully straight and flat with panels that are nicely aligned, unlike the way they came from the factory.

This blazer will be getting the 67/68 lower truck trim and paint scheme So all of the trim was mocked up, then holes marked and drilled. Two trim pieces had to be shortened to fit on the blazer bed, as the front section is slightly shorter than that of a short bed truck.

It is currently disassembled and getting ready to go onto the rotisserie. From there, it will get all the jambs and firewall bodyworked and ready for primer. Then eventually move onto paint and bedliner.

More updates to come.. (I'll try to do better at posting updates as they happen..😬) Also, another smaller project has been going on as well. More on that soon.. So stay tuned..

Several small things have been done to the blazer. One worth a mention is:

The new fuel filler location has been selected. It'll be via a fold down taillight. Alot of metal was cut out, assembly test fit (several times), and eventually welded in place. Several fine tuning adjustments had to be made to get it just right. Including some trimming to clear the bottom of the tailight as it folds out.

This next week the bodywork phase starts. 😬

1970 El Camino Update (1)

You may have noticed in a couple pictures in the last post, the bed floor being cut out of the car and some odd bracing in its place. That's because the original metal floor was so beat up, that it needed replaced. Instead of going through all of the work of cutting it out and just replacing it with a factory style floor, I had another idea. I talked over an idea with the owner back when we first started on this car, and they agreed to let me try something different.

So began the process of building a framework structure to support a wood floor while also being strong enough to keep the structural integrity of the car.

These cars were never built with wood floors in the bed, and the only ones I have ever seen done, were just "Drop in wood kits". Those kits are just as they sound to be. They just drop in the original bed, setting on top of the steel floor. Not the way I wanted to do it. So the floor had to bet cut out. We have left an edge around the perimeter of the bed to act as the mounting edge just like the trucks have. The idea is to make it look like it came factory. Simple and clean.

Dexter has been meticulously measuring, cutting, and trimming to get all the boards to fit perfect. He has done a fine job finishing out this part of the build. I bet he never expected to be a carpenter when he went to work here. 😂

Shop Update:

Some of you may remember a while back a 1970 El Camino making it's way to the shop. It was started on and worked on by me and a couple other helpers here and there. In that time, it made alot of progress. Unfortunately, the extra help went on to do other things and the El Camino had to be pushed to the side until its spot in line came up, or until new help showed up.

Fortunately for the El Camino and its owner, last week was that time. An old friend from back home has moved near our area here and decided to give the shop a try. He comes from a long background of cars. From fab work to restoration. He has started the El Camino project back up and is onto a great start. I believe he is going to be a great asset to the shop.

As for a project update on the El Camino, I leave you with some progress pictures from past, to present to get y'all all caught up on it.. More updates to follow. Stay tuned..

1972 Blazer update (5)

Been working on all the gaps and panel fitment. Finally got them dialed in and ready for epoxy primer. Ended up ditching the aftermarket front fenders due to them being way off from fitting the hood and grille. (See pictures) We had a pair of original fenders that fit pretty good. They just needed a little rust repair to be good to go.

Now that it is in epoxy primer, I will sand it and start on the bodywork. Stay tuned for the next update. Also, for a shop related update coming later today.

1972 Blazer Update (4)

Been working on the fiberglass top for the Blazer. Like most of them, it had several hairline cracks and even some small busted areas. After some fiberglass repair and some fiber reinforced filler, all repairs are finished. Had a few broken bolts as well. Thats always fun in fiberglass. Sanded down what was left of the factory texture and got it in some primmer.

The new drivers side bedside showed up, so I got it installed and I am currently working on getting the rest of the panels fit the best they can, before I start making the gaps and panel fitment spot on. Stay tuned for those results at the end of the week.

Bonus Fun Fact: Leaf Cutter Bees are a thing.. I found some weird rolled up leaf looking things in the rear hatch hinge area on the Blazer top. Turns out they were made by a type of bee that makes them for their young. (See last pictures)

The tailgate had a little spot of rust at the inside bottom, and a couple dents near the letters. Best way I know to fix the area around the letters when it has dents, is to split the tailgate in two and hammer/dolly them out. Then it gets welded back together. And yes, its worth it when the tailgate is otherwise in great shape. Aftermarket tailgates are molded wrong at the top, and tend to stick way out at the top.

Sanded all the EDP coating off the new panels and sandblasted the tough to sand areas. Now im just waiting on the drivers side bedside to come in. Should be in this week sometime. Stay tuned..

'72 Blazer update 2

Welded up all unnecessary holes in the firewall for a more clean look. It will be getting Vintage Air, so I cut out the section of firewall where the factory A/C went and welded in a smooth panel. Then extended the passenger side firewall corner to mirror the drivers side corner. All rust holes throughout the blazer body have been cut out, area around them treated/coated, and welded back up. Also welded up several holes that had been drilled throughout the years.

Finished welding in the radio panel. Got the drivers side bedside removed and the bed floor prepped for when the new bedside comes in. Started on fixing the original tailgate, but still have a little welding to finish on it. So it will be in the next update post. Stay tuned..

'72 Blazer update (1)

Got the passenger bedside removed and the new one installed. Lined up the passenger door and front fender, and installed one of the NOS rocker panels. Cleaned, rust protected, and painted inside the new rocker panel to help keep it solid for years to come.

The gaps between the door, fender, and bedside will be addressed and perfected at a later time. I did go ahead and finesse the door and fender edges to line up with each other alot better than they did. (Aftermarket parts..🙄) Also got the radio cutout on the dash replaced with a new patch panel so a factory radio can be installed again.

With the Camaro finished up and with its owner, a little shop cleanup and re-organizing was due. Now that that's out of the way, the next project is back in the shop and getting worked on.

This 1972 Blazer had actually been started on a little while back, when I had some extra help. Therefore, I already have some progress pictures from that time. Those are posted here to catch yall up with where it started, and where it is now, as I myself get going on restoring it. Stay tuned for one awesome and unique build...
