So, when should you REALLY change your oil? Should you do what the engine manufacturer says, or the oil company, or the old guy down the street? Let's get into it. The oil companies want you to buy their oil, so they're going to say change it often. The engine manufacturer is in more or less the same boat. The old guy down the street maybe knew something about oil 50 years ago, and things have changed since JFK was in the White House. So who should you listen to? Generally speaking it's best practice to listen to the engine manufacturer. Why? Because they're in a different place than the oil companies. They do want you to buy their engines, but they know that if they tell you to change oil too often, they'll get a bad reputation for being high maintenance. Like Ferrari as an example. Very high maintenance, but Ferrari owners don't care about that. I digress. Similarly, if they tell you to change it less often, they risk the engine breaking down sooner, and we're back to the bad rep thing. like Kia, as an example. Bad reputation for building junk. So they do have a vested interest in longevity. Unlike the oil companies who don't give a rat about that. They designed and built the thing, they know what's best. If they say 3,000 miles, change it at 3,000. Oil is a lot cheaper than a blown engine, even in a Kia. Which you should sell ASAP and get literally anything else.

So, what's everyone else doing this weekend? Engine assembly is simple, and it has its exciting moments, but it's really fairly tedious. It's important to do it right the first time. Speaking of doing it right, can anyone see what I'm about to do wrong? You're going to have to look closely. Here's a hint: the engine stand is bolted to the rear of the block.

Baby's first DOT violation yesterday. Actually 2 to be precise. When I first got my DOT number decals on the new truck, I stuck one on there just fine, but boogered up the other one, and took it off. So my driver door has a number, but my passenger door doesn't. That was one. The other was for the annual inspection. Yeah yeah there is no excuse for not having this, especially since I can do my own inspections! I didn't get a fine yesterday because the guy looked me up and saw a squeaky clean record. He let me off with just violations no tickets. Here's the thing - I have to drive past a different checkpoint today. If that scale is open and the guy sees my inspection sticker still isn't in place, I could get a heavy fine and even be taken out of service. Yes the stickers are coming but not soon enough for today. So... I think I'll take the scenic route to the jobsite this morning :)

What is Torque-To-Yield, or TTY? To understand that, you need to understand what is meant by the yield property of steel (or any material, for that matter). Steel is a flexible material. As odd as it may seem, it's elastic. The yield strength refers to the point at which the elastic property changes to a plastic property. Or in other words, the point at which steel will deform (plastic) instead of springing back to its original shape (elastic). So, why does that matter in the case of, say, clamping a cylinder head onto an engine block? Because the strength of a bolt when it is between yield and failure is much more consistent vs. before yield. More consistency means better results. Straight torque is read directly on a torque wrench and yield torque is measured initially on a torque wrench, but ultimately with a degree wheel, or similar device. This type of bolt is torqued to a ft/lbs number and then by additional degrees, sometimes in several stages each. So, since you're stretching the bolt to the point a bolt deforms, you can only use bolts like this once. Straight torque bolts can be used again and again. Does that mean you can re-use straight torque head bolts? Yes. Should you? That's up to you. For me, all cylinder head bolts get used only once, TTY or straight torque.

There never seems to be enough time or whatever to properly lubricate machinery. Jobsites are chaotic at times, and it's the little things that all too often get overlooked. Way too often I get something in that has grease zerks that haven't seen grease in ages. Or oil reservoirs that are completely empty. Your investment needs that stuff. Any grease is better than no grease at all. It's alot cheaper to pay a guy to l**e your machinery than it is to pay me to fix the damage. That said, mistakes happen, Murphy's law wins, and machines break. When that perfect storm hits, reach out, I'll get your investment running like the well - oiled machine it is!

It's summer. It's hot. Hot days and machinery that's been sitting for awhile commonly can mean one thing. Wasps. Yellowjackets, hornets, murder moths, sky demons, jerkbuzzers whatever you want to call them, they're nesting and active. Angry also. Did I mention angry? Yes, always. Whereas, most of the time I have neither interest in or even knowledge of a nest, initially at least, as soon as you start banging on that machine, out they come, and they would certainly be happy if you were dead. Personally, as I get older, I find myself more and more allergic to the satan saliva they inject into you. It's Saturday and my welt from Thursday is still growing, and itchy. Yes I've taken Benadryl, but man I hate that stuff. ANYWAY... on to the point of this post. In summer, find some space for wasp killer spray. It becomes the most important tool you can have with you. Take it from me, and my still - growing welt.

Why should you change your hydraulic fluid and filter per your equipment manufacturer's recommendations? Well, in short - a drum of hydraulic fluid is a lot cheaper than a new pump. Like your motor oil, hydraulic fluid can retain tiny bits of impurities and such that can get past a filter. It can also experience what's called shear breakdown / viscosity loss. On the molecular level, oils have hydrocarbon chains in them, that's basically a string that can break as it goes through the gears of a pump, for example. Those strings are one of the major factors in the viscosity of the fluid. Think of viscosity as resistance to pour. Or thickness of the fluid. When those chains break, the fluid gets thinner. When the fluid gets thinner, the barrier the fluid creates between your very expensive hard parts gets smaller and smaller, until eventually those hard parts touch each other and tear each other apart. That's just one reason to stay on top of your fluid change interval. Isn't that enough? It is for me. I'll discuss more reasons later. This is the tool I made to charge Bobcat 2500 breakers. It's a little primitive, and if I had to do it again, I'd make some changes, but it worked just fine. Why does the fuel / air mixture in your engine change with air pressure / altitude? It's all about density. Specifically oxygen density. A reciprocating engine has a fixed displacement. Each stroke of the piston will bring in (and push out) so much air. Let's say you have a 1L (Liter) engine with 1 piston. That means each time the piston travels down, it pulls in 1 L of the ambient air. Let's say at sea level, that 1L of air has a Million oxygen molecules in it. Not even close, but good enough to illustrate a point. That's a Million molecules of oxygen that your vaporized gasoline molecules can mingle with to burn. If you have a Million gas molecules mixing with a Million oxygen molecules, your engine goes BANG, and you go to Wal-Mart. Now let's go up to 10K feet. Your engine still pulls in 1L of air, and your carburetor still delivers 1M gas molecules. But - the difference is, at 10K feet, there is only 100 oxygen molecules to mingle with the 1M gas molecules. You have a LOT more gas floating around, with no oxygen friends to consort with. Your mixture gets richer and richer until your engine doesn't go BANG anymore, and Wal-Mart will have to wait. More later. Thanks for reading!
