Everybody thinks a full-size truck needs a big V8, but this F-150 is a perfect example of why that isn't necessarily true.
This is a 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCab, and before we talk about the price, let’s talk about what you’re actually buying. Under the hood is Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, and don’t let the size of that engine fool you.
This is a twin-turbocharged V6 producing 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, and that torque number matters in a truck because torque is a big part of the pulling force you feel when you accelerate.
This engine reaches peak torque at around 2,750 RPM, so it can deliver strong pulling power relatively low in the rev range.
Those two turbochargers use exhaust energy to force more air into the engine, which is part of how a relatively small 2.7-liter V6 can produce that kind of output.
Ford paired it with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and having ten gears gives the transmission more ratios to choose from so it can keep the engine in an effective operating range whether you’re accelerating or cruising.
Now, this particular F-150 is 2WD, which means the engine sends its power to the rear wheels, and that isn’t automatically a disadvantage. The real question is how you’re actually going to use your truck. If you regularly deal with mud, snow, difficult job sites or off-road conditions, you may prefer 4WD, but if you don’t need it, a 2WD truck can make perfect sense. This is also a SuperCab, not a Crew Cab, so while you still have rear seating, you should compare the rear passenger space with a Crew Cab if you regularly carry adults or need maximum room in the back.
Another interesting thing about this generation of F-150 is its construction: Ford uses high-strength aluminum alloy for much of the body and bed while underneath the truck is a high-strength steel frame, reducing weight while maintaining the body-on-frame construction expected from a full-size pickup. Now let’s talk about buying this one used.
2018 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCab is $24,398, including dealer fees. Don’t buy it simply because it’s an F-150, and don’t reject it simply because it doesn’t have a V8.
Come drive it, ask questions, think about how you’re actually going to use your truck, and decide
whether this configuration makes sense for you.
