Stock Market Today: Oil Heads for Biggest Monthly Drop Since 2020
Stock futures tick up with potential Iran peace deal in focus

Traders are meeting reports of a possible peace deal with Iran with a shrug.

Oil prices wavered, with the most actively traded Brent crude futures trading near $93 a barrel. Brent is headed for its biggest monthly drop since May 2020 after falling nearly 18% through Thursday. U.S. stock futures are ticking up a little and Treasury yields are largely unchanged.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said yesterday that Washington and Tehran are within reach of an agreement to wind down the war, though President Trump hasn’t signed off yet. The White House wants commitments from Iran to dispose of its highly enriched uranium and never to seek a nuclear weapon, as well as a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Investors have become accustomed to similar headlines as the conflict in the Middle East has dragged on. Yesterday, an Axios report about progress toward an agreement sent U.S. stock indexes climbing to new records. That enthusiasm carried over into Asia’s trading session, with indexes in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea climbing 2.5% or more.

U.S. stocks are headed for another month of strong gains. The Nasdaq composite is on track for its largest two-month percentage gain since April 2009, climbing 24% over that period.

Summary. Today’s leaders face increasing pressure on all sides, and their stress levels are higher now than they were even at the peak of the pandemic. Though stress can sharpen performance briefly, over time it erodes judgment, narrows perspective, and increases the risk of costly missteps. Most leaders have distinct default responses to it. This article outlines the six most common patterns: the calm lighthouse, the reinvention-oriented alchemist, the action-driven firefighter, the disciplined stoic, the relationship-focused diplomat, and the control-driven container. Each style has both strengths and blind spots that pressure can amplify. Leaders can increase their ability to perform under duress by identifying and understanding their default responses and then deliberately expanding their range of reactions—using simple tactics to regulate themselves, share the cognitive load, and alter their style in real time as conditions change.

Crude oil prices are falling sharply, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) trading at $87.06 per barrel and Brent crude hovering around $91.54 to $93.02 a barrel as of 5:30 AM EDT on May 29, 2026. Prices are down over 1% for the session and on track for an 8% to 10% weekly plunge. This represents one of the steepest monthly declines since 2020, with Brent collapsing roughly 17% to 18% since the start of May

👉Market Drivers & Geopolitical News👈

‼️U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Progress: The primary catalyst for the price crash is optimism surrounding a preliminary diplomatic breakthrough. Reports indicate the United States and Iran have tentatively agreed to a 60-day ceasefire extension and a blueprint to gradually lift shipping restrictions.

‼️Strait of Hormuz Reopening: Traders are heavily pricing in the partial normalization of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial global energy bottleneck that has been mostly blocked during the recent conflict. The potential flood of accumulated oil supply returning to the market is placing immense downward pressure on long-term futures

‼️Negotiation Uncertainties: Despite the aggressive market selloff, physical supply relief faces short-term friction. While U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Vice President JD Vance noted that a deal is "close", President Donald Trump has not yet formally approved the plan. Remaining sticking points include Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles and ongoing parallel hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah

‼️Weaker Economic Data: Compounding the geopolitical relief, global demand indicators look fragile. A recent Reuters poll indicates China's factory activity flattened in May due to domestic demand weaknesses and input cost shocks, while Saudi Aramco is expected to trim its July official selling prices to Asian markets
