Grace R. Tamkus

Grace R. Tamkus, 89, of 1458 West Walnut Street, Coal Township, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Grace was born in the family home in Mount Carmel on February 12, 1928, a daughter of the late Mary (Matsko) and David Rowe.

Grace attended Lincoln School and Shamokin High School.

She was a Housewife and had worked for 10 years as a trimmer for Lark's Dress Company, Shamokin.

Grace was married on July 1, 1950, in St. Michael's Church Rectory, by Father Klemis, to William J. "Slim" Tamkus, who passed away on December 10, 2016.

She was of the Protestant Faith and also attended Catholic Church with her children. Grace belonged to the St. Joseph Church Ceramic and Craft Clubs for 50 years. Also at St. Joseph Church, she worked at social gatherings, the annual block party and was a Cub Scout Den Mother for 11 years under the late Lindy Yocum.

As Grace herself stated, "I love my family to no end". A loving Mom, she is survived by 2 sons, Jeffrey Tamkus and his wife Cheryl, of Shamokin, and Vincent Tamkus and his companion Diane Elliot, of Excelsior; a daughter, Jeanne (Tamkus) Chaundy and her companion John Firestine, of Shamokin; 6 grandchildren, Chad Tamkus, David Tamkus, Kim Lucas, Kelly Hanes, Trevor Tamkus and Randy Tamkus; and 10 great grandchildren, Ashley, Zack, Austin, Jack, Jonah, Tyler, Leea, Tate, Dalton and Ryan; 2 sisters, Ruth Rowe, of Coal Township, and Dorothy Tyson and her husband Elwood, of Elysburg; and 2 brothers, John B. Rowe, of Coal Township, and Richard J. Rowe, of Kansas; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles Tamkus; a brother, David Rowe; and a sister, Ethel Jones.

Family and Friends are invited to call at the visitation on Monday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township. The Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 PM on Monday at the Funeral Home. Interment of her Cremains will follow the service at Northumberland Memorial Park, Sunbury. Arrangements have been entrusted to the James Kelley Funeral Home, James F. Kelley, Director, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township.

Robert D. "Bob" Kessler

Robert D. "Bob" Kessler, 84, of 6 South Harding Avenue, Shamokin, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at his residence. Robert was born at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, on November 14, 1932, a son of the late Mildred (Welker) and Darell A. Kessler.

Bob graduated with 4th Honor in 1950 from Shamokin High School.

He served in the Army as a Sergeant with HQ 8th Army during the Korean War. He received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and Commendation Ribbon With Metal Pendant.

He was married on July 30, 1955, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Shamokin, to the former Barbara A. Hoy, who survives.

An active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Bob was the church organist for 50 years and served as a Senior Warden, Junior Warden and Treasurer. He loved every minute he spent at his church.

Bob began his working career as a bookkeeper for National Dime Bank in Shamokin. He worked as a Systems Analyst at Cluett & Peabody, Arrow Division for 22 years. During that time he did extensive traveling across the Country. He was also a self-employed accountant.

He played with the Shamokin Our Band; and was a member of the B.P.O. Elks and L.O.O. Moose, both in Shamokin. He enjoyed golfing, especially with Bob Engle, his best friend and brother-in-law. He was known for his quick wit and always felt "you should make the best of every day".

Bob was one who loved spending time with his family. In addition to Barb, his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Bob is survived by 3 sisters-in-law, Patricia Engle and Corrine Thomas, both of Shamokin, and Hope Shepard, of Williamston, Michigan; 1 brother-in-law, Gary Hoy, of Baltimore, Maryland; nieces and nephews, whom he and Barb helped raise, Sharon Thomas Abromitis, John Thomas, Barbara Manning Clark, Kevin Manning, Patrice Engle Molesevich, Colleen Hoy Kaleta, Bernard Klees, Gloria Shepard, Patrick Shepard, Frank Marcinek, Brian Hoy, Billy Hoy and Timothy Hoy; many great nieces and great nephews; and numerous friends, many of whom were Bob's clients and became good friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Albert Kessler and James Kessler; a niece, Laurie Hoy; and nephews, Robert Engle, Gilbert Shepard, Gregory Hoy and Matthew Hoy.

A visitation will be held on Monday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 150 East Lincoln Street, Shamokin. The Religious Service will begin at 11:00 AM in the Church with The Reverend Sarah L. Weedon officiating. Interment of his Cremains will follow at Northumberland Memorial Park, Sunbury. Barbara M. Zanuck

Barbara M. Zanuck, 74, of 514 East North Street, Marion Heights, went to be with her Lord at 2:25 PM, Friday, February 10, 2017, at Mountain View: A Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Coal Township. Barbara was born in Mount Carmel on January 23, 1943, a daughter of the late Mary B. (McGrath) and Joseph T. Spieles.

She was a Homemaker and was married to Paul J. Zanuck.

Barb loved spending time with her daughters and grandchildren.

In addition to Paul, her loving husband, she is survived by two daughters, Dawn M. Raker and Lynn A. Sarisky, both of Marion Heights; a nephew David Spieles, who Barb was also caregiver for, and his wife Roseann, of York; a brother, John "Jackie" Spieles and his wife Karen, of Frackville; three granddaughters, Allison M. Sarisky, Heather C. Raker and Charlotte J. Sarisky, all of Marion Heights; and two grandsons, Zachary M. Raker and Jacob P. Raker, both of Marion Heights.

In addition to her parents, Barb was preceded in death by twin daughters, Marie Elaine and Elaine Marie; a son, Matthew; a grandson Joseph J. Sarisky; and two sisters, Gloria Spieles, who died in infancy, and Maryann Malick.

Family and Friends are invited to call at the visitation on Thursday, February 16, 2017, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, Second and Arch Streets, Shamokin. A Religious Service will begin at 11:00 AM on Thursday in the church with Rev. Sam Ballavia, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Coal Township. Jacob E. "Jake" Phillips

Jacob E. "Jake" Phillips, 24, of 219 Center Street, Coal Township, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016, in Manchester, York County, PA. Jacob was born at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, on July 27, 1992, a son of Kathleen A. (Purcell) and Robert J. Phillips, of Coal Township.

Jake graduated from Shamokin Area High School in 2011. While at Shamokin Area, he received 12 Varsity Letters for excelling in Track, Basketball and Football. He graduated from Lycoming College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Finance Economics and a Minor in Corporate Communications.

He most recently worked as a Sales Support Associate at Crump Insurance, Harrisburg, PA; and previously had worked for U-Haul in Shamokin Dam from 2012 to 2016.

Jake was well loved for his contagious smile and quick wit. He will be greatly missed by many and was loved by all.

Jake is survived by his loving family including his parents, Kathleen and Robert; a sister, Danielle M. Adams and her husband Jason M.; a sister, Megan E. Phillips and her fiance Jared J. Borich; Maternal Grandmother, Elizabeth Purcell; Aunt and Uncle, Amy and Dave Kurtz and their children, Cameron, Corbin and Claudia; Aunt and Uncle, Jenny and John Boylan and their children, Molly and Johnny; Aunt and Uncle, Lisa and Mike Zublick, and son James and his wife Stephanie; Aunt and Uncle, Deb and Curt Phillips, and their children Zak and Carrie; Aunt and Uncle, Karen and Walter Yadlosky, and their sons, Walter and his girlfriend Kate Santelli, and Sean; many more family members and numerous good friends. Kathleen "Kathy" Zyla

Kathleen "Kathy" Zyla, 67, of 404 North Franklin Street, Shamokin, PA, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, Coal Township after becoming ill at home. Kathleen was born in Shamokin, PA on July 15, 1947, a daughter of the late Helen (Haverty) and Harry Brehm.

On July 12, 1969, in St. Edward Church, Shamokin, she married Ronald E. Zyla who survives her. Reverend Woodrow Jones performed the marriage ceremony.

She worked for Northumberland County Children & Youth in Sunbury, PA, for 13 years. She previously was employed at Arrow Shirt Company and Shaw's Market, Shamokin.

Kathy graduated from Shamokin High School in 1965. She was a parishioner of Mother Cabrini Church; and a member of the St. Francis Home Association, Shamokin, and LARRC, the Lower Anthracite Regional Recreation Committee. She was an avid Notre Dame fan and followed GZC in the SYBL (Shamokin Youth Basketball League); she was affectionately known as the "Team Grandma". Kathy loved all things Irish; her favorite day and time of the year was St. Patrick's Day. She enjoyed Aunt Genny and cherished her two dogs, Maggie Mae and Super Bowl, who are both now deceased.

In addition to Ron, her loving husband of 45 years, Kathy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Tom Eckman, of Coal Township; a sister, Mary Anne Bixler, of Coal Township; and Nephews and Nieces.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 PM at James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 West Arch Street at Maple Street, Coal Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Mother Cabrini Church, 200 N. Shamokin St. at Webster St., Shamokin, PA. Those attending the Funeral Mass are asked to meet at the Church on Thursday at 9:45 AM. Interment will follow Mass in St. Edward Cemetery, Coal Township, PA. As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library, 210 E.
