Great place to ponder history across the street from the Alamo

A moose oversees the festivities at Menger Bar in the Menger Hotel, San Antonio. I took this photo in 2013. The bar, built in 1887, is probably most famous for the fact that Teddy Roosevelt gathered his Rough Riders there before setting sail to Cuba for the Spanish-American war in 1898. Less well-known is the fact that the Menger paid an architect to go to England, measure and sketch out the bar in the House of Lords, then come back and build a replica of it at the Menger. Pretty cool beans. Great bar, too. Even if you don't drink, it's nice to take a break during a blinding light summer day in San Antonio, step inside, take in the cool darkness, and ponder the history. The things that moose has seen and heard over the years! When nobody else was looking, the moose actually turned to me, smiled, winked, and said "What happens at the Menger Bar stays in the Menger Bar." 😎
