Community Input Needed for the Cayton Corner Park Mural
The Friends of Cayton Corner Park hired Hoa Hong to create a mural on the wall in the park. She’s currently asking the community for suggestions and asked us to pass the word.
“Hello neighbors! My name is Hoa, and I’m the artist selected to create the new public mural at Cayton Corner Park.
I’m currently gathering community input to help shape the mural’s concept and visual style. The artwork will focus on connection, belonging, and our shared public space, and I would love to hear ideas from people who use and care about the park.
I’ve created a short questionnaire where community members (including kids and families) can share their thoughts. Your responses will help guide the design.
📝 Take the questionnaire here: [link]
📅 Please respond by March 20 so I can incorporate community feedback into the next phase of the design.
Thank you so much for your time and support!

The Cayton Corner Park Community (Friends of Cayton Corner and Hearing Speech and Deaf Center) in partnership with Seattle Parks Foundation, is seeking a local artist (or artist team) to create a mural at the newly completed Cayton Corner Park in Seattle’s Central District. This project will celebrate the park’s namesakes, Horace Cayton Sr. and Susie Revels Cayton—early Black leaders, publishers, and community builders—and honor the neighborhood’s history of resilience, diversity, and creativity. Was looking of a map of Lake Forest Park and noticed a honorarium of a street designation for Octavia Butler. Her name was suggested for our park. She's extremely popular and because of that, our survey for naming the park went viral. As I recall we had votes from 5 countries and over 22 states in our random sample. However, she did not have enough significant activity in Seattle to warrant naming a park after her. The criteria being a connection to the park property or neighborhood. Instead other writers, Horace and Susie Cayton were chosen, as they resided in Central Area of Seattle for over 40 years and were active in making the community a better place.

https://seattle-cwiprod.motorolasolutions.com/cwi/tile We have been hearing complaints about the homeless encampment in the park. Please use the city of Seattle form to report it. We have filed on this end, but it would help if more people from the community would file so the city knows the urgency of this problem. Let then know what you are observing there. Thank you.

Our condolences to Bud Goodwin, owner of Rising Sun Produce on 65th in the Ravenna area, for the recent fire that destroyed his business. In the 80's he also owned Rising Sun Too on the site of Cayton Corner Park. In fact Rising Sun was a name the park's naming committee liked for the park, but because there was an operating popular business with the same name they opted for Cayton Corner Park, which was another good choice. He wish him a speedy recovering and hope you support his business when it reopens,

The closure of Ravenna’s Rising Sun Produce is a huge loss for both the community and its employees.
