How To Polish A 100-Foot Hull REALLY FAST (Part 2)

Someone commented that leapfrogging isn’t an effective strategy because cords get tangled and it’s difficult to know where the other technician left off.

Here’s the thing.

Those aren’t polishing problems.

Those are system problems.

First, cord management.

If you’re working at a dock with shore power, you can run cord reels, extension cords, and designated power stations. If a cord gets tangled, unplug it, reset it, and keep moving.

That’s not a production bottleneck.

Second, knowing where someone left off.

You should never be guessing.

Whether you’re working alone or with a crew, always leave a visible transition line into the next section.

Don’t completely wipe off your boundary.

That way everyone knows exactly where the previous section ended and the next section begins.

If you stop for lunch, come back tomorrow, or hand the section off to another technician, the work stays organized.

Third, communication.

One technician works to the cleat.

The next technician starts at the cleat.

One works to the stanchion.

The next starts at the stanchion.

Simple.

Large projects are completed through systems, communication, and workflow.

Not by working harder.

The bigger the boat, the more important the system becomes.

That’s why production matters.

How do you polish a 100-foot yacht without wasting time, overlapping work, or creating bottlenecks?

You build a system.

One of the most efficient approaches is what we call the “leapfrog” method.

Each technician is assigned a small working section of the hull. As soon as the first technician completes their section, they move ahead of the last technician in line and begin the next section. The team continues advancing down the hull in sequence.

The result?

Instead of one person working an entire side of the boat, the crew progresses together down the vessel, maintaining consistency, workflow, and momentum.

On larger vessels, a properly coordinated team can move through an 85-100 foot hull surprisingly efficiently because everyone is focused on a specific step in the process.

Marine surface restoration isn’t just about compounds, polishers, and products.

It’s inspection.
It’s process.
It’s systems.

The bigger the boat, the more important the system becomes.

Some backyards come with a different kind of access.

A 24ft Cobalt SD brought back from heavy oxidation, dull gelcoat, and years of surface breakdown.

This project required more than a basic boat detail. The surface needed structured oxidation removal, multi-stage gelcoat correction, refinement, and ceramic coating installation to restore depth, clarity, and long-term protection.

The video shows the process:
surface inspection → oxidation removal → correction stages → gloss restoration → ceramic coating → customer review.

This is what happens when marine detailing is treated like a surface restoration system — not a quick polish.

Restored at North Lake Marina in Kenmore, WA. For Cobalt boat owners in the Seattle area, this is the difference between temporary shine and true gelcoat correction.

Happy Easter Sunday & Resurrection Day.

“For God so loved the world that He gave…”

We just released a new guide:

How to Restore Oxidized Gelcoat: Choosing the Right Correction Path for Your Boat

If your boat keeps fading after polishing or you’re not sure what it actually needs, this breaks it down clearly.

Not every oxidized boat needs the same level of work. Some surfaces respond to a lighter correction path, while others have deteriorated to the point that polishing alone will not produce a stable result. Understanding that difference is what helps boat owners avoid temporary shine, repeated correct...

The shine fades for a reason.

This explains why:

Most boat owners believe that once a boat is polished or detailed, the finish should stay glossy for years.Unfortunately, that’s rarely how marine surfaces behave.Because boats live outdoors and are constantly exposed to the elements, many vessels fall into a costly cycle that forces owners to rep...
