🦀 Crabbing in Oregon: What You Need to Know Before You Go! 🌊

Oregon’s estuaries are full of opportunity, with some of the best crabbing found in Tillamook Bay, Yaquina Bay, and Coos Bay. Whether you’re a seasoned crabber or just getting started, timing and preparation make all the difference.

🗓️ Best Time of Year
Fall is prime crabbing season! Starting in September, crabs are more “filled out,” meaning better meat quality. Look for hard-shelled crabs—they can have up to 20–30% meat, compared to much less in soft shells. Late summer through early winter can also be productive, especially in smaller estuaries. Keep in mind, heavy rain can push crabs out of the bays.

🌊 Best Time of Day
Aim for “slack water”—right at high or low tide. That’s when crabs are most active and out foraging instead of hiding from strong currents.

📍 Where You Can Crab
Good news—crabbing in bays, beaches, tide pools, piers, and jetties is open year-round. Just remember: ocean crabbing is closed from Oct. 16 through Nov. 30.

🎣 Gear Up Before You Go
✔️ Shellfish license
✔️ Crab gauge (know the legal size!)
✔️ Pots or rings
✔️ Cooler & bait
✔️ Well-marked buoys

Always check the Shellfish Safety Hotline (1-800-448-2474) or the Oregon Department of Agriculture website before heading out.

🥩 Bait Tips
Fresh bait is key! Chicken, fish carcasses, clams, or even turkey legs all work great. Pro tip: use a bait bag to keep seals and sea lions from stealing your catch.

Crabbing is a great way to enjoy the Oregon coast and bring home a fresh meal—but safety, timing, and preparation are everything.
