After a hurricane, your safety comes first. 🌀 Damage can be overwhelming, but knowing what to do before you start cleaning up can make the insurance and repair process much easier.
🌀 WHAT TO DO AFTER HURRICANE DAMAGE
1. Make sure it’s safe. Stay away from downed power lines, standing water, unstable trees and damaged structures. Don’t return to an evacuated area until officials say it’s safe.
2. Take pictures BEFORE you clean up. 📸 Photograph and video everything—your home, vehicles, roof, fences, outbuildings and damaged belongings. Get wide shots AND close-ups. Don’t throw damaged items away until you’ve documented them.
3. Prevent additional damage when safely possible. Cover broken windows, tarp roof openings and move belongings away from incoming water. Keep receipts for tarps, plywood, towing, temporary repairs, hotels and other storm-related expenses.
4. Contact your insurance company. Have your policy number ready and report the loss. Write down your claim number, adjuster’s name, phone number and every conversation you have.
5. If your vehicle was damaged, document it before moving or repairing it. Take photos of hail, flooding, fallen-tree damage, broken glass and debris. Do not start a flood-damaged vehicle. Water can cause serious electrical and mechanical damage.
6. Remember—you choose your repair shop. Your insurance company may recommend a shop, but you can choose where you want your vehicle repaired. Get the damage properly inspected before authorizing repairs.
7. Watch out for storm scams. Be cautious with door-to-door contractors, large upfront payments and anyone pressuring you to sign immediately. Verify licenses, insurance and references when applicable.
8. Keep a storm-damage folder. Save photos, videos, estimates, receipts, claim paperwork, emails and a list of damaged belongings. Good documentation can be extremely important if questions come up later.
