Mud is easily the messiest terrain, and it can also be one of the most treacherous you encounter. It can be soupy, slick, gooey, or sticky. Different consistencies of mud will require different techniques to conqueror.

Real mud rigs run healthy engines with big, aggressive cams. However, one byproduct of a big cam is that there's no vacuum to run power brakes. Most people convert the master cylinder to manual brakes or convert to a hydroboost system and run four-wheel discs, since drum brakes quickly become clogged to the point where they begin to lose effectiveness. In addition to being lighter than drums, discs are somewhat self-cleaning.

Got Juice? Nitrous oxide kits consist of a compressed liquid nitrous oxide source connected to the intake manifold. When the driver needs a nitrous boost, he presses a button or flips a switch to release the liquid into the engine. Just like any fuel source, the nitrous oxide canisters must be refilled periodically. When nitrous oxide is injected into the intake manifold, it breaks down at elevated temperatures, yielding more oxygen than atmospheric air. The denser concentration of oxygen allows the engine to burn more fuel and air, resulting in a greater output.

At the very least consider covering the radiator temporarily while travelling through mud, and be certain to keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Mud provides a large amount of resistance and prolonged mudding can wreak havoc on torque convertors and engines.

When forward momentum stops, let off the gas. Often times you can put your vehicle in reverse and back up, even if it's just a few inches, then try to continue forward again. This see-saw action will get you out of many hairy situations.
