The California Energy Commission (CEC) is proposing new regulations that would require all replacement tires sold in California to meet specific efficiency and safety standards.

If adopted, tire retailers and all automotive repair shops would be able sell only “California-compliant” tires or face penalties and enforcement actions.

These regulations are expected to increase tire costs and reduce the availability of affordable replacement tires for consumers.

Given today’s economic challenges, these regulations should be delayed until the CEC fully evaluates their impact on consumers, small businesses, and the automotive industry. By increasing tire prices and limiting access to lower-cost replacement tires, the proposal would place an added financial burden on working families, rural communities, and local businesses at a time when affordability is already a major concern.

We urge you to review the attached opposition letter and participate in the public hearing to express your concerns.
