The Remember Crusin' Car Club mourns the passing of one of our founding club members, Ernie DeMarco. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Bring your old cars to the service if you'd like and car shirt casual attire is fine as Ernie would like it that way.
Ernest James "Big Ern" DeMarco Obituary
Ernest James “Big Ern” DeMarco, 78, of Sandusky, Ohio, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with a severe blood infection.
Ernie was born on September 27, 1947. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, companion, and friend whose greatest joy came from spending time with the people he loved.
He is survived by his son, Anthony (Michelle) DeMarco; his daughter, Annette (Matthew) Crum; his cherished grandchildren, Cameron (Sydney) Crum, Kaarri DeMarco, Chase (Miah Laser) Crum, and his loving companion and “main squeeze,” Kim Chavarria.
Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Dianne Marie (Williams) DeMarco; his parents, Nicholas DeMarco and Sue (Wally) Canino; his brothers, Gene and Wally; and his sisters, Virginia and Teresa.
Ernie retired from Delphi at the age of 62 after many years of dedicated service. Retirement gave him more time to enjoy the things he loved most.
Anyone who knew Ernie knew he loved life. He loved spending time with his family and friends, working on and talking about his 1964 Chevy Impala SS black with red leather interior, enjoying a good breakfast or dinner, and creating memories with those around him. His relationship with Kim brought him great happiness in recent years. More than anything, Ernie loved to tease, joke, smile, and laugh. His quick wit, infectious laugh, and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Kim Chavarria, Lenny, Jimmy, Jackie, Lloyd, and Gary for their love, friendship, and unwavering support throughout Ernie’s journey. They also wish to express their sincere appreciation to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Firelands Regional Medical Center for the compassionate care they provided.
Friends may call on Friday, August 7th, 2026 from 10 a.m. until time of Celebration of Life at noon at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky, Ohio 44870 with Pastor Don Spurlock officiating.
Ernie’s legacy will live on in the laughter he inspired, the stories he created, the kindness he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
If you knew Ernie, you probably have a story that begins with a smile and ends with a laugh. That’s exactly how he would want to be remembered.
