Oil pan re-seals/replacements are always fun when the engine is still in the car. Gravity is constantly working against you, pulling oil downwards into the area you are working, no matter how long it has been drained for. The mating surfaces must be completely clean to ensure a perfect seal, and even the smallest bit of oil can ruin the entire day you've spent.

Client was unable to dodge some debris on the highway and it poked a hole in the pan about the size of a grain of rice, so I am replacing the pan.

The best way I have found to fix a leaking oil pan or leaking rear main seal is to do both at the same time. Unfortunately the transmission, clutch, and flywheel have to be removed so it is no simple task.

Do what works best for you!

Focus ST at the shop right now that showed up for a requested walnut blast, to try to resolve a misfire concern... In my experience, these engines do not misfire due to carbon deposits.

Instead, we transitioned into a diagnostic procedure which had me check for trouble codes, then check compression to verify engine health, and finally, perform a visual inspection. The car was idling strange, had 4 codes for an o2 sensor and 3 for misfires, and the AFR was stuck at 14.7 regardless of throttle input/load.

The compression test was perfect and the engine has never been opened. It has an upgraded turbo, FBO, and some other modifications upon visual inspection. I found the upstream o2 sensor had a blue sheathing (not OEM) so I advised the owner we replace it immediately with an original FoMoCo/Motorcraft unit. After that, I reset the learning/codes and took it for a 30-mile test drive to allow the PCM to learn the STFT/LTFT. Air fuel ratio was now reading accurately, the car was idling smoothly, and no codes returned.

Unfortunately, all the tuning done using this previously installed sensor, which could have been supplying incorrect/skewed data to the PCM (and the tuner) all along. The LTFT was between 13-21% while cruising/decel/idle during my test drive, and with no signs of any exhaust leaks, the tune will likely need an adjustment now for all driveability situations which is super inconvenient.

Please use OEM electronics on these cars! Inputs and outputs are equally important for keeping a modern, direct injection, turbocharged engine alive, especially when cranking up the power.

Graison's Fiesta suddenly experienced a very prominent exhaust leak from the exhaust system on his Fiesta ST so he dropped off for diagnostic.

We found the AIRTEC tubular header for his S280 did not have adequate welds connecting the collector to the turbo fl**ge fl**ge and had cracked. The manifold was also installed with improper hardware by another person/shop with one stud cross-threaded in the cylinder head. The turbo, downpipe, header, and intake tube were removed so Zack Trafton Fabrication could perform a repair on the bench.

Additionally, we straightened both fl**ges, upgraded the OEM head/mani studs to ARP hardware, replaced the exhaust gaskets, and installed a Thermal R&D Performance at the same time to make sure things stay sealed for years to come.

Something I have been explaining pretty frequently here recently at the shop and online to save people and hopefully this helps get a point across...

ALMOST every modification you do to your vehicle will come with a compromise in some way, shape, or form. How much it effects you is strictly based on your personal preference.

Do not just "upgrade" everything on your car because you can or because something is available... Stiffer engine mounts. Bigger turbos. Ethanol-based fuels. Stronger clutch kits. Larger/louder exaust systems. Adjustable end links. Standalone ECUs. Built engines. Coilovers/suspension. Tuners/Calibrators. Brake pads/rotors... and this one above all... TIRES!

All of this stuff comes at a cost and any one of them will sacrifice something to do something else better. The application in which you utilize your vehicle should always be your most important contributing factor and cost should be your least when making a purchase. It's easy to turn your awesome machine into something you despise/regret.

Let me help you avoid that before you buy anything. I have built some of the sickest street/race cars on this platform through years of experience alone. Use my background to your advantage and ask before you spend your money!

Kelsy's new (to her) Focus RS has an aftermarket downpipe causing a P0420 catalytic converter efficiency code so she asked for help. Swapping out the downpipe can be done without removing the subframe (by removing the battery box and reaching back into the depths of hell).

But right here is a prime reason why dropping the subframe for this job can be a blessing. I found whoever originally installed the downpipe cross-threaded the turbine housing holes and one of the studs was barely even grabbing. I was luckily able to run an M10 x 1.5 tap through it to clean it up, and had great visibility/space to do so with the subframe out of the way.

Not wanting to deal with any of this s**t again anytime soon, we replaced the studs, nuts, gasket, and both o2 sensors with anti seize while it was all apart.

This one should be ready for an inspection sticker!

The best friends (and sponsors) you make aren't the ones you beg for, they're the ones you earn. They're the ones who notice your dedication, value your time, and respect your drive. They have the same goals and want to see you succeed as much as you do.

The new Damond Motorsports billet Focus ST/RS intake manifold showed up today for my racecar. I have never had my own sticker/vinyl/name on any car I've ever built, but I will proudly represent the ones who are willing to help my cause! You'll see a Damond sticker on every one of my cars for a reason. Stoked to have this piece making a statement in my engine bay this season. 💪

Nick's Focus ST has experienced a couple of clutch/pressure plate failures over the last couple years including both OEM and aftermarket parts so he asked me to have me take a look. Another shop installed the last unit and he was convinced it was feeling inconsistent and had slight doubts about their workmanship. They were not really dilligent in explaining the last failure he and was curious if there was an underlying issue.

I found the previous shop had not torqued the flywheel bolts and bellhousing bolts adequately, and left the input shaft dry causing rust to form where the clutch disk needs to slide during engagement/disengagement.

We replaced the aftermarket performance clutch kit with new OEM parts, including an ST flywheel, RS clutch, RS slave, OEM clutch lines, and new front sway bar end links. I cleaned the input shaft of rust and applied a small amount of lubricant to keep things moving freely. He picked up yesterday and I asked he check back in to let me know how things are feeling when he gets some miles on them.

Thank you Nick for trusting me to make sure everything is setup properly! 💪 I hope it drives well.

Although not all of our goals were reached, we couldn't be more thankful for our friends at Engineered Motorsport Solutions Inc. for hosting/organizing the EcoBoost class and giving us the opportunity to show our support again as the "Presented By" sponsor for 2026.

Bracket racing is about consistency, not about who is the fastest. Come race with the fastest EcoBoost-powered cars, have some fun, and win some money/prizes! Hope to see you there.

Damond Motorsports oil catch can installed on the GR Corolla today and I'm impressed with the new billet housing and ease of installation. It also fits under the engine cover which keeps this thing looking unmodified, which I prefer for street cars.

One of the best maintenance/performance mods you can do for the money. An oil catch can or air/oil separator is beneficial at any power level and becomes even more valueable as you increase power. Anyone who tells you otherwise probably shouldn't be giving advice or working on your car.

For those looking to recirculate their PCV system (like on the GRC here), separating the air and oil is huge, because that air is plumbed back into the engine to be burned again for emissions reasons.

For those looking for every bit of horsepower in a race application (like my black Focus ST,) trapping this oil v***r and venting the clean air to atmosphere can have massive gains because the pressure isn't being forced against the bottom of the pistons anymore.

More boost = more crankcase pressure.

Better knock prevention ✅️
Cleaner intake/charge piping ✅️

No lift or special tools needed, only 20 min install!
