Today we had the honor of welcoming Firefighter Alejandro Medrano to Station 34. Alejandro is a Second Officer with the Proteccion Civil y Bomberos Puerto Vallarta in Mexico visiting his family in San Jose.
We swapped shirts and patches, traded stories, and spent time talking about the job. Alejandro shared photos of how his department still runs older San Jose Fire Engines and opened up about the 2nd degree burns he suffered when fighting a fire in Puerto Vallarta.
will be reaching out to Alejandro in the hopes of donating him turnouts and other Firefighting gear to assist him and his fellow Bomberos.
Different cities, Different countries, Same commitment.
Always good to connect with brothers and sisters from outside of San Jose.

San José needs more firefighters and fully staffed fire stations.

Today, San José Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 230, sent a letter to Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren requesting her support for San José’s SAFER grant application.

San José remains one of the lowest-staffed metropolitan fire departments in the country. Station 32, which is intended to serve one of our city’s highest-call-volume areas, is still not operational, and Station 33 on Communications Hill remains closed.

The SAFER grant would provide critical firefighter staffing for Station 32 and move our city closer to delivering the level of public safety our residents deserve.

More firefighters mean faster emergency response, safer working conditions for our crews, and safer communities.

Thank you, Congresswoman , for your continued support of firefighters and public safety. We look forward to working with you to help secure this critical funding for San José.

Today, San José Fire Fighters Local 230 members proudly pushed in our new ARFF apparatus at Station 20 at San José Mineta International Airport. 🚒✈️

This apparatus represents more than a new piece of equipment—it represents the firefighters and working people who protect an airport that connects San José and the Bay Area to people around the world.

Union labor is at the heart of keeping our airport moving and our community safe.

From our Local 230 firefighters to the building trades, 911 dispatchers, air traffic controllers, pilots, flight attendants, TSA, SJPD, and airport employees—it takes all of us working together, around the clock, to keep travelers and our community safe.

We’re proud to welcome this new ARFF apparatus into service and proud of the union brothers and sisters who make San José Mineta International Airport run every day.

New rig. Same mission: protecting San José and everyone who travels through it.

In Memorium:

Captain Martinez began his fire career in 1997 at the age of 26 with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in the Fresno County Ranger Unit. He continued to work for CDF until he joined the San José Fire Department in September 2001. Jose worked as a firefighter from 2001-2004, was promoted to Fire Engineer in 2004, and was promoted again to Fire Captain in June 2011. Jose wore badge number 633 with distinction throughout his San José career at Engines 5, 26, 35, and finally at Engine 12.

Captain Jose Martinez passed after a courageous but extremely short fight with a rare and aggressive work-related cancer. He was only 41. He is survived by his wife, Melissa; 8-year-old son, Jonah Miguel; and twin 3-week-old girls, Sofia Maria and Olivia Eleanor.
