The San Diego City Council voted Monday to lower speed limits on about 20% of city roads as part of its Vision Zero effort to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries.

The plan, approved earlier by the councilโ€™s Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, uses a data-driven approach to reduce speeds in neighborhoods, commercial corridors and school zones.

New state laws give cities more flexibility to set limits below the default 25 mph. High-crash corridors could see 5 mph reductions, business districts may drop to 20 or 25 mph, and school zones could be reduced to 15 or 20 mph near campuses.

City officials identified 679 miles of roadway eligible for changes. The reductions could take effect next fiscal year, pending budget approval.
