As summer winds down and students head back to school, our roads become a little busier, and a little more unpredictable. Whether you're sending a brand-new driver off to school or navigating the morning commute, now is the perfect time to get back to the basics of vehicle and road safety.
Start with your vehicle. Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition and your headlights are bright and functioning properly. Clear visibility is essential. You will need to watch for children at crosswalks, cyclists, and school buses during the busy morning and afternoon rush.
Next, don't overlook your brakes. A quick brake inspection can help ensure your vehicle stops safely when you need it most. If your teen is driving, it's also a great opportunity to review the importance of maintaining a safe following distance and staying focused behind the wheel.
Speaking of focus, distractions are one of the biggest hazards for drivers of all ages. Consider a hands-free phone mount and charger so navigation and important calls can be managed safely. Better yet, remind new drivers that no text or notification is worth taking their eyes off the road.
Before school schedules kick into high gear, schedule a routine oil change and have your vehicle inspected. A little preventative maintenance now can help prevent unexpected breakdowns later.
It's also smart to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. A few essentials can make a big difference if you find yourself stranded. Your kit should include: jumper cables, flashlight with extra batteries, work gloves, reflective triangles or road flares, bottled water and non-perishable snacks, and a basic first aid kit. Don’t forget to check that your spare tire is properly inflated and ready to use.
Finally, remember that school zones require extra patience. Slow down, obey school zone speed limits, yield to pedestrians, stop for school buses when required, and never block a crosswalk. A few extra seconds of caution can help keep everyone safe.
