Baja Trip planned for Dec 15-16.
Info:
Hello Amigos, Amigas,
I wanted to address some of the questions that have been asked, and provide some info for the upcoming trip to Mike's Sky Ranch. I am sure this post will not answer every question, but I hope it outlines the plan a little bit for those who have never been riding in Baja. One thing that I have learned in my few years of Baja riding is that the more you plan the more you will have to re-plan. This is roughly what we want to do: Saturday - Tecate - Constitution National Park (lunch,gas)-Valle de la Trinidad(gas)-Mike's Sky Ranch. Sunday - Mike's-San Vicente(gas?)- Ensenada (lunch)- Tecate or T.J..
1. Meeting point and time will be on US side of the border at the gas station on the left side of the 188, aka Tecate Road, about 200m before you enter Mexico at 8:00 am.
2. The riding will not be extreme off-roading. We will spend as much time as possible on dirt, but much of the route will allow us to get on the pavement if necessary. There will be some sand, some rocks, hills, turns and everything else that you should expect to find whilst riding your motorcycle off-road. We are not taking any "crazy" trails. Conditions change with the weather, so there may be some wash-outs from the recent rains and the rains to come later this week. Each day will be about 170-200 miles.
3. Knobby tires are not necessary, but will always make dirt riding easier.
4. Bring Cash. Credit Cards are rarely accepted. ATM's are hard to find and don't always work. Mike's only takes cash- $70 per person including dinner and breakfast. Pesos are good for gas and taco stops, but small US bills work fine.
5. Don't bring guns or any ammo!
6. This is a one night trip you do not need much luggage. Baja is very casual, a sweatshirt and riding pants work great.
7. Bring the tools that you feel comfortable bringing, welders are easy to find in Baja.
8. Pack your own lunch for Saturday. We will stop for gas in the Pine Forest and there is not much for sale other than chips and candy bars.
9. Wear gear that can be warm, cool, waterproof ect. A good jacket with venting is key and an off-road type helmet with goggles will keep the dust out of your eyes.
10. Some phones will work, some will not, all phone companies will charge you for using your phone in Mexico. I will bring my Spot for major emergencies.
11. Passport
12. You can buy insurance before you cross the border: BajaBound.com
I hope that this helps, any questions please feel free to contact me. If you are in need of any gear, parts, tires or anything else SD BMW MC has it in stock. Can't wait to get south of the border!!
