WILL THE DMV TAKE YOU ONTO THE FREEWAY FOR YOUR BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TEST?

SOMETIMES.

Most test takers will not drive on the freeway during their exam. The exceptions are people with physical issues, a history of accidents, or some type of notice by their physician.

Recently, I worked with a driver in her 90s. Her history of accidents combined with her age prompted the DMV to give her either a Supplemental Driving Performance Evaluation (SDPE) or an Area Driving Performance Evaluation (SDPE) which included driving on the freeway to see if she could properly merge into the traffic and exit. Some people require extra scrutiny of their abilities, and the examiner has a lot of discretion.

DO YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO PASS YOUR BEHIND-THE WHEEL DRIVING TEST?

Take it at the Indio DMV. It has a whopping 89% pass rate!

Why is it so easy compared to closer DMVs? The area has less traffic, simple intersections, and virtually no pedestrians especially in the summer with extreme temperatures. It takes a little over an hour to get there from San Bernardino in light traffic.

HISTORY OF THE RIGHT ON RED TURN AND WHY YOU SHOULD NOT PERFORM ONE ON YOUR BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TEST AT THE DMV.

Did you know that California was the first state to legalize the right on red turn maneuver in 1947? While a few other states followed, the right on red did not become legal throughout the United States until the mid 70s. In response to the OPEC oil embargo, the federal government mandated that the right on red become legal nationally, except in places where it was deemed too dangerous, as a way to extend limited gasoline supplies.

Generally, I advise students to refrain from making right on red turns on their behind-the wheel test for a number of reasons. First, right on red turns are never mandatory. They can only increase your chances of making a critical error and not passing. Remember, cars making right on red yield to everyone else. Since all of our DMVs are located in busy urban areas and the tests are given during business hours, waiting for the light to turn green is usually the most prudent thing to do. Second, students often misjudge the speed of the oncoming traffic from the left or take so long to complete the turn that a generally safe turn becomes a hazardous one. Third, students tend to be overly focused on the oncoming traffic from the left and forget about cars making protected left turns, protected U-turns, and pedestrians and cyclists from the right.
