A NOTE FROM T MAX (publisher editor of the Noise since 1981)
Here's a short history of the Noise…

THE NOISE IN PRINT
In 1981 I was playing in the Machines. Despite getting airplay on WBCN, WMBR, and WZBC, we had a tough time getting any kind of regular coverage from the existing print media--the Boston Globe, the Boston Phoenix, Boston Rock--so the band decided to produce it's own fanzine that w

ould cover the local music scene and we'd take half a page to write about our band. The bass player, Teddy Virgin, was able to get the printing done for free behind the back of his boss at his day job. The first issue (Sept '81) of the Noise was seven one-sided pages of stapled xeroxed 8.5 " x 11" sheets with no advertising. One thousand copies were printed each month and we'd have a pizza collating/stapling party. Then we'd drop them off at all the clubs and appropriate music-related businesses around Boston. After the first few issues, the band broke up--and the bass player no longer wanted to risk his job with the printing. I was having a lot of fun connecting with other musicians and doing the layout and organizing people who could write. I figured I could get some advertising to pay for the printing to keep the Noise going. Our first real advertiser was Synco Sound—the Cars' recording studio on Newbury Street. Soon after WBCN would become a major advertiser, regularly taking out full page ads on our back cover. I've managed to keep the Noise printed regularly for 32 years now. Our readership has multiplied itself over 13 times and we now cover all types of music throughout New England (notice the subtitle is now Music New England). The Noise is the longest running music magazine in New England. THE NOISE ONLINE (https://www.thenoise-boston.com)
Somewhere in the '90s the Noise's website (thenoise-boston.com) was born and has stayed a constant sister publication of the print issue. It contains feature stories, CD and live reviews, the Big Shot, Rock School, Noise Live Picks, and Rita and Lolita's gossip column Our Eyes on You. Reader comments can be made at the end of each online column. You can also find achieves of older stories and reviews there. T Max, publisher/editor of the Noise
