Powerbore: A Leader in Custom and OEM Cylinder Sleeves

Located in Salem, Ohio, Powerbore—a division of Quaker City Castings—manufactures custom and OEM cylinder sleeves for a broad range of engine applications. Whether your needs are standard, or high-demand, such truck and tractor pulling, or marine, street, cycle and other types of drag racing, strong, well-built, precisely-manufactured cylind

er sleeves are of paramount importance. At Powerbore, we believe in taking a centralized, American-made approach, which starts with our own nearby foundry—in fact, it’s located right across the street! Having a foundry of our own means not importing materials (and as such, avoiding the risk of contamination, incorrect composition, and poor quality control), instead allowing us to cast and machine every sleeve we sell. Many manufacturers provide cylinder sleeves in a limited range of materials, which may be less than appropriate for highly demanding applications. Powerbore cylinder sleeves maximize the potential of any project: We can cast nearly any ferrous material found in the comprehensive ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) manual— and even custom-cast materials of your own design. If you require a sleeve in non-standard dimensions, we can help—custom cylinder sleeves are our specialty. Powerbore utilizes a number of materials—but for truck and tractor pullers, drag racers, and other “power users”, we proudly offer and most highly recommend Power Ductile™—our proprietary ductile iron, whose mechanical properties significantly outperform those of industry standard 100-70-03 ductile iron. Power Ductile™ is up to any task you can put it to. It’s time to make the most of your engine applications. Choose Powerbore, where strength, quality and precision is built into everything we do. Machining a cylinder sleeve to size is only part of the process.

The final honing operation creates the crosshatch pattern inside the bore that helps the engine perform as intended.

That pattern serves several important purposes:
• Holds a thin film of oil for lubrication.
• Helps piston rings seat properly.
• Reduces friction during operation.
• Promotes longer ring and cylinder life.

Without the proper surface finish, even a precisely machined sleeve can struggle to seal correctly or wear prematurely.

Precision doesn't end when the sleeve is manufactured. The final finish matters just as much.

📏 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀

When an engine is being built, there is very little room for error.

Cylinder sleeves are measured in thousandths of an inch because even the smallest variation can affect how an engine performs.

Proper inside diameter, outside diameter, wall thickness, and roundness all contribute to ring seal, oil control, heat transfer, and long-term durability.

That level of precision doesn't happen by accident. It comes from tight manufacturing tolerances, consistent machining, and thorough inspection.

For engine builders, thousandths aren't just measurements. They're the difference between an engine that performs and one that comes back apart.

Engine blocks are built to last, but they are not immune to wear.

Over time, heat, friction, contamination, and thousands of hours of operation can wear or damage the cylinder walls.

That does not always mean the block has reached the end of its life.

Cylinder sleeves allow worn or damaged cylinders to be restored without replacing the entire engine block.

For engine builders, machine shops, and rebuilders, sleeving can return an engine to specification while extending the life of one of its most expensive components.

A quality rebuild starts with a solid foundation.

Sometimes that means saving the block instead of replacing it.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗺!

What a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July.

We had a great time taking the PowerBore motorhome through the Salem 4th of July Parade and seeing so many familiar faces along the route. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, waved as we passed, and helped make it a great day.

We're proud to call Salem home and appreciate the continued support from our community.

Now it's time for the next stop.

We'll be heading to the National Tractor Pulling Championships in Bowling Green, Ohio on August 20, 21, and 22. If you'll be there, stop by and see us. We'd love to meet you and talk engines, tractor pulling, and cylinder sleeves.

We'll see you at the track.

A cylinder sleeve does not just provide a surface for the piston rings.

It also plays a major role in moving heat.

During combustion, temperatures inside the cylinder can exceed thousands of degrees.

That heat has to go somewhere.

A properly fitted cylinder sleeve helps transfer that heat into the engine block and cooling system.

Poor fitment, poor contact, or poor material consistency can affect that process.

And when heat is not controlled, performance, wear, and reliability all suffer.

In high-performance, diesel, and heavy-duty engines, heat management inside the cylinder is a major part of long-term durability.

Cylinder sleeves are part of that equation.

More boost. More fuel. More RPM.

More power means more stress inside the cylinder.

At a certain point, stock components stop being enough.

That is where PowerBore comes in.

We manufacture cylinder sleeves built for high-performance diesel, racing, tractor pulling, heavy-duty, and custom engine applications.

If your build demands strength, precision, and durability under extreme conditions, you need components built for that environment.

Do not wait until the weak point shows up.

Build it right from the start.

High-horsepower diesel tractor builds operate under extreme conditions.

Higher boost, increased fueling, and aggressive tuning create massive cylinder pressure and heat inside the engine.

At those power levels, factory cylinder walls can quickly become a concern.

That is why cylinder sleeves play such an important role in serious diesel tractor builds.

A properly built sleeve setup helps reinforce the cylinder area, maintain stability under load, and support the engine under extreme combustion pressure.

In high-horsepower applications, reliability matters just as much as power.

Because making horsepower is one thing.

Keeping the engine together while making it is another.

A cylinder does not always wear evenly from top to bottom.

Over time, heat, pressure, friction, and ring travel can cause certain areas of the cylinder wall to wear more than others.

That creates cylinder taper.

In simple terms, the diameter at the top of the cylinder may be different than the diameter at the bottom.

Even small amounts of taper can affect ring seal, compression, oil control, and overall engine performance.

That is why engine builders carefully measure cylinders before deciding whether a block can be reused, bored, or sleeved.

Small measurements can reveal major problems.

When it comes to engine performance, thousandths of an inch matter.
