Unsung Bruce and his vintage gas-powered Stihl string trimmer got a good workout today clearing close to one-half of our trail system. This year's spring weather produced unusually strong plant growth that challenged hiker-friendly passage in the Reserve. He plans to remedy the situation in the other half next Wednesday.

These once-small plants were purchased several years ago with funds from a Glenn-Gibson Watershed Council grant. As a result of loving care provided by Reserve volunteers, they are thriving and gaining in size and beauty in the Westside and Eastside Pollinator Gardens. Thank you, Glenn-Gibson Watershed Council.

Steve enjoys using the Reserve's W**d Wrench. He has become a master in how to use it by evaluating where to attach the jaws onto the trunks and the best pull angles for the most leverage. His W**d Wrench skill is helping to thin out overpopulated stands of Indian plum that are robbing sunlight, nutrients, and water from other plants. We have discovered Vine Maple, Big Leaf Maple, Hazel Nut, Madrone, and other species struggling to thrive. The second photo shows a Madrone misshapen from chasing the elusive sun for decades.

Jean and Tom are seen working on building a lockable hose-storage box to lessen the amount of labor involved in watering the Reserve's plant gardens. Presently, the more valuable hoses are stored in the locked metal shed in The Roost, a tiring amount of distance from the main water spicket, where the box will be secured to the ground. If left out, these hoses are vulnerable to theft. In the last several years, two hoses have been stolen.

A couple of Tuesday evenings ago, four Chemeketa College students came out to the Reserve to fulfill a Biology 101 requirement of doing some environmental volunteering. This spring, we have been overrun with Wild Cucumber, a native plant that has turned villain with its climbing vines smothering more desirable vegetation. Their assignment would be to take on this infestation. Click on the pictures for more information.

The Roost, just east of the Reserve's parking lot, has a new picnic table, thanks to one of our top benefactresses. Come on down and try it out. The old one was giving way to time-related dilapidation. Parts of it were saved for a future undisclosed project.
