Team Tom & Jean is making progress on the construction of our machine shed. This progress, however, has been slowed by having to remove nails and staples from the repurposed old deck lumber and fence boards before being cut into individual lengths and then attached to the structure. Patience and persistence will win the day. Click on the pictures for more information.

Salem Audubon President Michael Babbit skipped his usual Wednesday volunteering at the club's woodshop to help us at the Reserve. Instead of making nesting boxes, he was lopping branches from uprooted Indian Plum. He was good at it and seemed to enjoy himself. Later, he joined his foot soldiers at McDonald's for refreshment and conversation. He wants to write an article about what's going on out at the Reserve for the Kestrel newsletter. That's Michael in the foreground.

Jean is a seedster. She gathers seed. She saves seed. She sows seed. Followers of the Reserve's Facebook know we have been selectively culling an overabundance of Indian Plum to encourage conditions for more diversity of understory plants. Here is where Jean comes in. She has been sowing selfheal, fringe cup, fox glove, columbine, and some vine maple. We will see how these infusions respond to the rains of fall, winter and spring. We have plans for other additions, including Oregon grape, nine-bark, etc.

Richard Van Pelt donated two pieces of machinery he was no longer using that we could use productively in the Reserve. However, we have runout of easily accessible storage space. It was time to put Team Tom & Jean back into action. Just a few days ago, using lumber from a volunteer's decommissioned deck and leftovers from his new deck, they started the framing for the new builing.

Probably the Salem Area's most diverse volunteer, Mark Wigg worked once again delivering a thick layer of woodchips to our Osprey Way Trail. This long trail is almost finished. Below is what the lean and mean Mark posted on his Facebook.

"The Salem Audubon Nature Reserve in West Salem is a great place for a Work Out. I am incorporating Tai Chi walking into my chip hauling, i.e., deep breathing, stretching, straight back, etc. The mile of trails in the Reserve includes steep hills. I love the wild flowers that pop up."

Jean spent considerable time preparing a planting bed for grass seed around our new wildlife viewing bench in hopes of curtailing erosion and helping to keep the concrete pavers a fighting chance against tracked on dirt. The seed was lightly covered in onsite decomposed woodchips and should have little difficulty in germinating.

The weather predictors had it right; our Wednesday morning work crew would be toiling in a much-needed rain. Nonetheless, eight volunteers showed up to continue working on selectively clearing surplus Indian Plums to make room for out-competed plants and planned infusions in our attempt to add to the diversity of the Reserve's understory. Afterwards, it was down to The Golden Arches for a hot McCafé to regain some of our body heat lost to wet clothing. Not pictured are photographer Bill and non-attendees Barry and Steve. On the left are Bruce and Blanka; on the right are Lee, Jean, and Tom. As you can see, there would have been plenty of room for you at the table.

A former Salem Audubon Society President, Mark Wigg has for forty years volunteered all over town as a goodwill ambassador in a variety of roles making our community a better place.
The following is from a post on his Facebook:
"Good morning for a Work Out. Cool and cloudy made moving chips to trail at Salem Audubon Nature Reserve easier. I am very impressed with the work Lee, and the volunteers have done at the Reserve, very little blackberry and ivy, and artsy signs to help navigate. A guy walked by and said this route is much preferred over walking on the sidewalk next to traffic. The osprey above the trail was loudly encouraging with her high-pitched screeches. If you want a forest bath with hill climbing, this is a good place to go."

Janita is well-known for volunteering in the Bush Park rose gardens, the Waterfront Park Carousel, and the Salem Audubon Nature Reserve. She also competes in Dragonboat Races. In addition, her huge Facebook following enjoys viewing her naturalist posts and related topics. Recently, she took a friend on a tour of the Reserve.
