2:1 halyards.

Who else installs a swivel here whenever possible?

The twist builds up from winch wraps - and it’s hard to get rid of it.

Yes… you should try to eliminate the wraps… but nobody’s perfect, it’s inevitable. So a swivel lets those sneaky twists escape without causing your halyard to get all twisted.

Important. Remember the block that the 2:1 runs through at the head of the sail should NOT swivel.

What can 3.2kW of solar actually do on a cruising catamaran?

Quite a lot.

We’re getting ready to install this 3.2kW solar array on a Leopard 50, and an array this size can dramatically change how much you need to rely on your generator.

Air conditioning. High-output watermakers. Electric galley appliances. Refrigeration. Electronics. All the everyday loads that add up quickly on a cruising boat.

But there’s an important caveat: solar doesn’t solve everything.

Even with a massive array like this, several cloudy days, unusually heavy power consumption, or simply not enough sun can still mean firing up a generator or using high-output alternators on the main engines to put some serious energy back into the batteries.

The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate those other charging sources.

It’s to need them a whole lot less.

Less generator runtime. Less engine runtime. Less fuel. Less maintenance. Less wear and tear.

And a much quieter boat.

Which reefing line was Reef 1 again? 👀

Here’s one of those simple tricks that saves a lot of head scratching when it’s time to put everything back together.

Before we pull the reefing lines out of a boom:

Reef 1 → one figure-8 knot
Reef 2 → two figure-8 knots
Reef 3 → three figure-8 knots

Watch to the end and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

No notes to lose. No trying to remember whether the red line was Reef 1 or Reef 3. And most importantly, anyone on our team can come back to the boat and immediately know which line goes where.

Simple. Easy. Repeatable.

It’s little systems like this that make rigging jobs go a whole lot smoother.

Mystery solved, now you can see what the piece of track on the masthead is doing.
