Welcome back Coach Michael!

Coaching all our young racers takes a big team, and we're excited to have Michael Yost back for his second summer to share his experience racing all over the country. It will be great fun to have him teach our racing team! Watch out, Chesapeake Bay.

Hello, families of MRYC Junior Sail!

My name is Michael Yost. I am so excited to be a returning coach to Miles River again this summer. If I didn’t get the chance to meet you last summer, I am currently a senior in high school at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland. I started sailing at Miles River when I was six and have fallen in love with the sport. Over the past 9 years, sailing has brought me all over the United States. I competed in many national regattas in both Optis and C420s and countless other events on the Chesapeake. Through MRYC, I made some of my closest friends, and I am so excited to help give a similar experience to your families this year.

This past summer, I had a fantastic time learning to apply my sailing experience as a coach. I can not wait to use what I have learned to help the countless motivated kids at this club. I hope they can build as many memories at MRYC as I did.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on the water and making this the best summer yet!

All the best,
Michael Yost

Hi Junior Sailors!

My name is Ine Balestrini, and I'm so excited to return to the Miles River Yacht Club for my fifth summer in this beautiful program! You probably remember me as the RWB Race Coach for the last few years. I´m happy to announce that I will be taking on a new role as Assistant Head Instructor this summer! I´m blessed to be part of the Junior Sailing Program and help it develop.

Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I have been sailing my whole life. After graduating from Law School, I made a tack on my career, focusing on the sailing industry for the last 20 years. I´m blessed to be able to share my passion with young sailors and travel around the world, coaching and developing sailing programs and watching them grow in this amazing sport.

I´m looking forward to meeting all of you this summer. We'll have a fantastic summer sailing the Chesapeake shores!

Finally, the big day is here. Registration is open for the 2025 summer Junior Sail Program! Are you ready to start?

So, what do you need to know to register for classes? Very good. I'm glad to see you're thinking ahead. Here are the most common questions and our answers:

Q. Is there room for my student?
A. Last year, most classes filled by January 15th, and many students could not take classes. Signing up early is best to get into the classes you want.

Q. Why register now?
A. You can save your spot for a $50 deposit per session. You only have to pay the balance later in the spring. There are even options to pay automatically in installments.

Q. How do I know if my student is ready for sailing classes?
A. If your student is at least going into first grade and can swim well, your student is ready. Swimming is important. There is a swimming practice drill on the first day of every week.

Happy Holidays! Can you believe it's almost time to register for Junior Sailing?

The good news is that class options are easy because they are the same as last year. Many classes have different skill levels, so you can find a class that matches your student. So what are they? Here we go:

Sea Kids:
Fun intro to boating and sailing - A class for 6 to 7-year-olds.

Opti Beginner:
The starting point for most kids. No sailing knowledge needed.

Opti Intermediate:
You've sailed in Optis before and remember some things.

Opti Adventure:
You can sail well but would rather not race.

C420 Beginner:
You're tall but not a skilled sailor yet. More skills training.

Racing Teams
Opti Racing Team:
Yep! You're racing on your Optimist. You want to travel.

C420/Laser Racing Team:
You're older and taller, and you're Racing! You want to travel.

Hopefully, those descriptive names are straightforward.

So, what can I expect when registering for classes?

When registering, the first thing you might notice is that some of the classes seem like they are already full. Several classes use a waitlist to ensure students are qualified before they sign up. Just join the waitlist, and we will accept you into the class when we check your experience. Racing Team students will notice this because all racing students must qualify. We monitor the waitlists and will let you know by email. Or we might add you straight from the waitlist because we know you so well.

Racing Team students will also notice that we combined the Green Fleet Optimist class with the Opti Racing class. Almost all racing students are in Opti Green, and working with higher-skilled racing coaches is best for the Green Fleet students. Yes, Green Fleet travels to regattas.

MRYC Junior Sail Registration will open on January 2nd at 1 pm.

What are the dates?

We know the dates for camp next summer, so now is the time plan for the week or weeks you want to attend. Planning out summer vacation, along with all the sports camps for kids, can be daunting! It's best to pull out the calendar and start now.

Here are the weeks:

June 16 - June 20
June 23 - June 27
June 30 - July 3 (racing classes only)
July 7 - July 11
July 14 - July 18
July 21 - July 25
July 28 - August 1
August 4 - August 8

Which class should I take?
Is your student 6-7? You will take Sea Kids.
Is your student older? You will take Opti Beginner.
Is your student a teen? You will take C420 Beginner.
If you have attended the camp in the past, you know the drill. Once you graduate to the next class, take that one.

We recommend one week of class for students in Sea Kids and two or more for older students. We can help you find the right class if you have any questions.

You will want to do a little research about your student's health background. Parents usually know the important health information, but grandparents need to ask. Both parents and grandparents can register students for classes, but grandparents should ask for this information before starting:
the student's previous sailing experience
two distinct emergency contacts with phone numbers
the student's physician's name and phone number
does the student have any health problems
does the student have medications, diet issues, or allergies
Just so you know, you will need this information to finish registering.

Last summer, we found that classes were filled in 15 days. We only take 60 students a week across all classes.

You will use a credit card to make a non-refundable deposit of $50 per week to hold the class for you. We might be able to move a class after you register, but we can't register more students after we fill up. We also recommend signing up for a "payment plan" to pay the class balance automatically. This saves everyone time.

If a class you want to take fills up, we will let you sign up on a waitlist. The registration site offers that as an option. Sometimes, people change plans, and a class opens. If that happens, we'll make sure to reach out to you over email. We always contact the next parent on the list while trying to keep families together. All racing students sign up on a waitlist so that we can be sure you're qualified.

If we can answer any questions for you, please get in touch:

Do you know a teen or college student interested in coaching for the summer? We'd love to talk to them. We hire people 16 and up with sailing experience in a junior sailing program.

Junior Sailing Camp for 2025!

Go, go, go, we have the schedule for the summer of 2025.
Pull out your calendar, and let's start planning!

Registration Opens: January 2nd (at 1 pm)

Week 1: June 16 - June 20 *only 4 days
Week 2: June 23 - June 27
Week 3: June 30 - July 3 *only 4 days
Week 4: July 7 - July 11
Week 5: July 14 - July 18
Week 6: July 21 - July 25
Week 7: July 28 - August 1
Week 8: August 4 - August 8

Dinner and Auction: July 11th
MRYC Junior Regatta: August 7th
Awards for all kids: August 8th

What's up with Week 3? It's for the Racing Teams only. It's too crazy a week for beginner kids, but we will have some private coaching available if that helps. People are also confused by Week 1. We will celebrate Juneteenth along with everyone else in the US, so there is no class on June 19th. The classes are prorated, so you only pay for four days of class.

Are you interested in housing a coach for the summer? If you have a spare room and you can put up a college student for the summer, it's a great way to save on summer classes. You can get up to 4 weeks of camp for free just by housing a coach. Plus, it's a great way to expand the experiences of your young campers!

Are we hiring coaches for 2025? Definitely! If you know a teen interested in coaching for the summer of 2025, have them get in touch with me directly. New people interview with the head coach (their peer, not an older person) starting after Thanksgiving. We try to hire everyone before senior coaches return to college in January.
