Another life lost. Another preventable death. Another headline that should never have to be written.
A 19-year-old roadside mechanic was killed while working on a disabled semi-truck along Interstate 696 in Warren, Michigan. He was doing his job, on the shoulder, with emergency lighting activated, exactly where he was supposed to be.
And it still wasn’t enough.
According to reports, a passing vehicle caused another driver to lose control and enter the shoulder, striking and killing this young worker on scene. Nineteen years old. A teenager. Out there earning a living, exposed to traffic that refuses to respect the most basic rule: move over or slow down.
Let’s stop pretending this is unpredictable.
This is not an “accident.”
This is a pattern of failure.
Failure to move over.
Failure to slow down.
Failure to treat the shoulder like it’s occupied by human beings instead of disposable obstacles.
Nine struck-by deaths in 2026. And we’re not even halfway through the year.
How many more before it matters?
Every responder, every tow operator, every roadside technician knows the truth: the shoulder is a war zone, and the public keeps driving through it like nothing is happening. Lights flashing. Workers exposed. And still, drivers blow past at highway speeds like it’s just another lane.
This young man didn’t die because he made a mistake.
He died because someone else did.
And until there are real consequences—serious enforcement, meaningful penalties, and a shift in driver behavior—this number will keep climbing.
Slow Down Move Over Inc. is calling for immediate accountability, stronger enforcement of Move Over laws nationwide, and harsher penalties for violations that lead to injury or death.
Enough warnings. Enough reminders.
People are dying.
